Obituary

Golden "Butler" Adkins, Jr.
(July 5, 1951 - August 25, 2012)

Golden “Butler” Adkins, Jr., 61, of Huntington, WV, passed away Saturday, August 25, 2012, at his residence. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 29, 2012, at Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington, with Rev. Hubert Harvey officiating. Burial will be in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington, with Huntington Lodge #53 AF & AM conducting Masonic graveside rites. Butler was born July 5, 1951 in Bluefield, WV a son of Golden Butler Adkins of Huntington and the late Charlotte Kirby Adkins. He was a hospital administrator at the Huntington Veterans Administration Medical Center. Illustrious Butler started his Masonic journey in the DeMolay with H. Pat Oshel as his DeMolay dad. He then advanced to be PM of Huntington Lodges #152 and #53, PMEHP Royal Arch Chapter #6, PEC Huntington Commandery #9, Past Grand Commander of Knights Templar of WV, KYCH, Past Venerable Master, Wise Master, Commander, Master of Kadosh in the Valley of Huntington Scottish Rite Bodies, KCCH, and 33rd. Degree Inspector General Honorary of Scottish Rite, York Rite College, Knight Masons, Red Cross of Constantine, Rose Crucians and OES. He was also a member of Beni Kedem Shrine Temple, IOOF #64, and Fifth Avenue Baptist Church and was a graduate of Marshall University. Butler was a coach, mentor and friend to hundreds of Masonic brothers over the years. He was an excellent ritualist in all Masonic Bodies and Masonry was his life. He was not a tall or big man in stature but he was a giant in life. He was overpowering through his deep voice and knowledge at any gathering he attended. There are no suitable words to express our loss by his passing. There was only one like him, her can never be replaced; there was only one G. Butler. In addition to his father, survivors include: sister, Sylvia Jo Adkins of Keyser, WV; brother and sister-in-law, E Kirby and Doriine Adkins of Keyser; and friend, Lois Hoover of Huntington. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Tuesday, August 28, 2012, at Chapman’s Mortuary with an Honor Guard of Knights Templar and a Scottish Rite Memorial Service at 7:00PM.
