Obituary

Marvin Zane Gray "Paw-Paw", was born November 25, 1943, in Welch, WV, a son of the late Harlan Gray and Ann Gray-Grizzel, and later loved and raised by step-father Ervin Grizzel. One son, Scott Johnson also preceded him in death. He peacefully went home to the Lord Jesus Christ on February 17, 2017. Funeral services will be conducted 10:00 am Monday, February 20, 2017 at Chapman's Mortuary, with Pastor Phil Wilson officiating. Burial will be in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville, with the Marine-Corp League of which he was a member conducting military graveside rites. Marvin joined the United States Marine Corps in 1961, and during his ten years of service he earned many meritorious awards and medals, including the rank of Staff Sergeant. He bravely served two combat tours during the Vietnam war, and he followed those tours by leading security elements of the U.S. Embassy in Iran, Cyprus, Vietnam and Libya. Upon entering civilian life, Marvin moved to Huntington, WV. He was a graduate in Business Management and Higher Accounting, and then entered the petroleum and business profession. He owned and operated multiple automotive service stations, as well as an automotive parts retail distributorship. Marvin also served as the Executive Director of the West Virginia Gasoline Dealers Association and lobbied at all government levels for the interests of the state petroleum industry. Mr. Gray was an active member of the community, serving on the Huntington Jaycees, Huntington Urban Development, Huntington Housing Authority, and the Marine Corp League, which culminated in the naming of the Marcum Terrace Family Center to the Marvin Gray Family Center. Marvin was personally awarded as a "Distinguished West Virginian" by the state governor in 2008. Marvin came to know the Lord Jesus Christ and was baptized on December 2, 2007. He faithfully attended Harmony United Methodist Church, where he served on many committees and as a trusted board member. Mr. Gray is survived by his wife of 37 years, Rose Baker Gray; his children, Robyn Gray, Kim Webb, Brian Johnson (Brenda), Sean Gray (Ann), Niel Gray (Chanda). He cherished 14 grandchildren, along with brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends. Marvin's faith and service touched countless hearts and lives, and although he will be missed by many, we can rest easy knowing he is now renewed at home in Heaven rejoicing in his Lord and Savior. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Sunday February 19, 2017, at Chapman's Mortuary.
