Obituary



James Percy McSweeney, 97, of Huntington, WV and of the Village of Riverview, Barboursville, WV, stepped into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, January 1, 2017. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm Thursday, January 5, 2017, at the First Church of the Nazarene in Huntington, with Dallas Moore and Rev. Fred Ramey officiating. Burial will be in Woodmere Memorial Park in Huntington, with military graveside rites by VFW Post 6878. Percy was born November 13, 1919 in Wayne County, WV a son of the late George and Eva Leap McSweeney DeVault. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Lavina Maxine Jones McSweeney; his second wife, Erma Lee Ross McSweeney; a son, Ronald Lee McSweeney; two son's-in-law, Jack Howard and Daryl Stevens; as well as his siblings. Percy was retired from Borden Dairy, was a member of First Altizer Freewill Baptist Church, and a Veteran of the 83rd Division of the United States Army during World War II. Percy fought in five major battles including the invasion of Normandy, France, deploying on Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion, the liberation of Paris and Belgium, the Rhineland and the "Battle of the Bulge" in the Ardennes Forrest. He also participated in the liberation of prisoner of war camps, delivering food and supplies to the prisoners that were held there. He is a member of "the greatest generation" and a wonderful example of a Christian. Percy sang with his wife Maxine, son Danny and daughter-in-law Melody as the McSweeney Family, traveling and singing the Gospel of Jesus Christ for over 25 years. He leaves a wonderful testimony of how God's Grace can change a life and help him to leave behind a legacy that will extend for generations to come. Survivors include: a daughter, Diane Stevens of Greenup, KY; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim (Nancy) McSweeney of Barboursville and Danny (Melody) McSweeney of Huntington; eight grandchildren, Shawn, Dawn (Dwayne) and Bucky (Amy); Kelli (Pete) and Kristi (Tim); Brian (Emily), Keith (Melanie) and Jason; ten great-grandchildren, Ali, Jack, Daniel, Carylann, Ripley, Harper, Zachary, Brady, Hunter, and Lorelei; one great-great-granddaughter, Sadie; a half-sister; two half-brothers; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, including a very special great-niece, Beth Ann Kreuger; and his aunt, Sarah McSweeney. The family appreciates the staff and all his "Sweetie Pies" at the Village At Riverview for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Altizer Freewill Baptist Church, 216 3rd. Street Altizer, Huntington, WV 25705. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, and after 1:00 pm Thursday at First Church of the Nazarene.
