Deloris Jean Stevens
Delores Jean Stevens, 79 of Huntington died March 12, 2012 at Cabell- Huntington Hospital. she was born in Huntington, WV to the late Peggy Coleman Atkins and Louie Allen. Delores was preceded in death by her brother Walter M. Lewis, sister Ethel-Mae A. Pearson and one grandson Kevin Lewis. She was employed by the Frederick and Prichard Hotels and Huntington State Hospital. After moving to Baltimore, MD she received her high school diploma and two associate degrees in Psychiatric and Geriatric Nursing with Johns Hopkins Hospital. Jean attended Douglas High School where she met and married Harold "Bunky" Stevens. They were the parents of seven children. Harold, David, Yvonne, Gregory, Teresa, Michael and Roy. She was an avid bowler with the Ebony League and a member of the J.W. Scott Community Center Social Club. Mrs. Stevens was a pioneer of Save Our Sisters, Fairfield Towers Mob Squad, and very instrumental in establishing the Marie Redd Center. She was a member of Young Chapel AME Church and the Liberation Choir. Jean also was know as a "Melody Kid" which was aired on the radio and she traveled to sing throughout KYOWV with the Melody Kids. She leaves to mourn her seven children, one brother; Hubert "Pete" Allen, 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren. A host of cousins, Nieces and nephews. Many special friends at Fairfield Towers, Mrs. Fannie walker and a special cousin Rosa Jackson. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Young Chapel AME Church. Friends may call from 12:00 noon until the time of the service at the church.
