Reverend Doctor David Clinton Witherspoon, Sr.
On the 15th of May, 2015 at 6:35 A.M., the Reverend Dr. David Clinton
Witherspoon Sr. departed this earth to go rest with the Lord and his
fathers. Born December 9th, 1927 in Winston-Salem, N.C. to the late
Rev. Jesse and Roselie Murray Witherspoon, David and his family later moved
to Washington D.C. In his early life, David began to play the piano and
became very good at mastering the instrument. He later went on to perform on
the Chittterling Circuit and it was there that he performed with many of the
greats, such as the late B.B. King, Etta James, Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters
and a host of other great musicians. He graduated from Cardoza High School in
1940, Washington, D.C., also a graduate of Tri-State Bible College, South
Point, OH. He joined the U.S. Military and served his country before going
back to his love of music. While following his love of music, he journeyed
to Huntington W.V. and it was there, 61 years ago, that he met the greatest
love of his life, Anna Lois Oakley, and after two weeks the Lord placed his
blessings on both and they became husband and wife. David continued
his life as a musician and later became known as Billy Witherspoon and
formed a local/regional band known as the Billy Witherspoon Combo. Being
raised in a Church family, he soon became involved in Calvary Baptist Church
as what he called the minister of music. It was there that he started the
youth choir known as the Gospel Echoes. This choir soon expanded to become a
75 member choir which later produced a gospel album. In 1985, David was
called into the Ministry and on Dec. 9th, 1985 delivered his trial sermon
and later became ordained by Rev. Douglas Carter. Rev. Witherspoon was well
loved and known by many and his story is a long story and his journey has
been a long and glorious one. This is in no means the end but just another
chapter. Rev. David C. Witherspoon Sr. is survived by his wife of 61
years, Anna Lois Oakley Witherspoon; his children, Diane Reddix and David C.
Witherspoon Jr. of Washington, D.C., E. Marzetta Flourney of Huntington,
