Bruce Martin, M.D., passed away Sunday, November 14, 2010 in St. Mary’s Medical Center after an extended illness. Dr. Martin was born January 15, 1924 in Lanexa, VA. He was a son of the late Herbert E. Martin Sr. and Mary Frances Bruce Martin. As a child, he attended New Kent County Schools and graduated at the age of 16. He graduated from the University of Richmond with a Master’s of Science and continued his studies at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. Upon obtaining his medical degree he then went to Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. where he completed his training in Pediatric Medicine and met his future wife Mary Eileen Birch. After serving in the United States Navy as a 2nd. Lieutenant in the Medical Corps during the Korean War he returned to Washington where he and Eileen were married on April 4, 1953. After a honeymoon in New York City, they settled in Huntington where Dr. Martin started his private practice. Dr. Martin was preceded in death by his beloved wife in December of 1992, his parents, his brother Herbert E. Martin Jr. and his wife Peggy and his sister Jean Watts Rose. He is survived by his children Christopher Bruce Martin of Ona, Kimberly Paul (Eddie) and Kevin Brent Martin of Huntington; two grandchildren, Mary Emily and Edward Martin Paul of Huntington, a sister-in-law Barbara Hendrick and her husband Charles; several nieces and nephews’ Sharon Bailey, his office nurse for 45 years; many dear family friends including Betty Peck of Huntington and Kay Reardon of Landsdown, Virginia; Margaret Herbert of Owings, Maryland and Pat and Kenny Thompson of Lancaster, South Carolina. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, where he was active in the Wednesday afternoon bible study , the Cabell Co. Medical Society, the WV Medical Association and the Southern Medical Association where he made many lifelong friends. Dr. Martin’s main focus in life however was his family and his patients. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and he will be missed not only by his family but also his many friends, patients and colleagues. Along with his private practice he served for over 40 years at the Cabell County Pediatric Clinic. He was extremely proud of the fact that he practiced medicine for 50 years retiring in August of 2003 at the age of 79. His only regret was that he was not able to continue his practice past the age of 80. Funeral Liturgy will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 17, 2010, at St. Joseph Catholic Church by Monsignor Lawrence Luciana, Celebrant. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Klingel Carpenter Mortuary.
