Maurice Joseph Flynn
(September 5, 1923 - December 3, 2011)



MAURICE JOSEPH FLYNN, 88, of Huntington died Saturday, December 3, 2011 at the Woodlands Health Care Center. He was the son of the late Kathleen Farry Flynn and Maurice S. Flynn of Huntington. His wife of 65 years, Hazel Ferguson Flynn survives. Also surviving are; his son, Richard F. Flynn of Huntington, grandchildren, Richard F. Flynn (Jessica) of Huntington and James F. Flynn of Cumberland, Md.; and great grandchildren, Gavin and Reese. He is survived by very caring nieces and nephews. Maurice was predeceased by two sons, Maurice Joseph Flynn Jr. and James George Flynn; and sisters, Elizabeth Flynn Wilcox and Rose Flynn Klein. Maurice was a graduate of St. Joseph High School in Huntington and of Marshall University in 1947 with a Bachelor of Arts degree where he was a member of Phi Tau Alpha fraternity, serving as President, 1946-1947 and was a founding member of the Marshall Chapter of Omicron Delta Kappa. He was listed in Who's Who in American Colleges. Maurice was a veteran of WWII service in the 87th and 28th infantry divisions and with the 95th infantry division participating in action at Metz, France, the Saar River, Siegfried Line and the Ruhr, Germany in the European Theater. Awards received include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, European Theater Medal with battle stars and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He retired as a major and in 2001 was commissioned an Honorary Colonel in his regiment. In 1949, Maurice received the L.L.B. degree from Washington and Lee University where he was a member of Phi Alpha Delta, legal fraternity. He began the practice of law in Huntington, September 1949 where he became associated with Joe W. Dingess in 1951, as Dingess and Flynn. Maurice succeeded Mr. Dingess as a Director and later served as General Counsel at Huntington Federal Savings Bank. Later the firm became Flynn, Max, Miller and Toney. Maurice served as a board member and President of the Cabell County Health Department, President of the Huntington Rotary Club and President and board member of the Huntington YMCA. He became a member of the Marshall University Foundation in 1974 and, on retirement, became an Emeritus member, Circle of Gold. He was a member of the Cabell County and West Virginia State Bar Associations; Pro Bono counsel, West Virginia Legal Services Plan and served as attorney for Lawyers Title Insurance Corporation and Counsel to the Huntington Police Commission. Maurice had many interests. He especially enjoyed travel, hiking on the Appalachian Trail, rafting on the New and Gauley Rivers, keeping track of CSX operations and attending Marshall Football and Basketball games as well as playing golf. Maurice was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where his funeral will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 7, 2011 by Monsignor Lawrence Luciana. A Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, December 6 at Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary. The family would like to thank the staff of Woodlands Health Care for the constant and loving care Maurice received. We also wish to thank Hospice for being very helpful.
