Joseph Aluise
(December 8, 1914 - November 18, 2011)

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Second book of Timothy chapter 4 verse 7.
Mr. Joseph Aluise died at the Woodlands Retirement Community on Thursday, November 18, 2011. Joseph was born in Richwood, West Virginia on December 8, 1914, the son of Agazio and Teresa Aluise. In 1924, Agazio and Teresa moved their family to Huntington, where Joseph remained for the rest of his life. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Agazio and Teresa; Vanda Citti Aluise, his wife of 62 years; and his brothers, Antonio, Bruno, James, Frank, Albert and Wilbert, his sister Melina and his granddaughter Teresa. Joseph is survived by his sister Mary Malloy, Boise, ID and brother Sam Aluise and wife Gay, Clarksburg, WV; his sisters-in-law Nancy Aluise, Chloe Aluise and Ann Aluise, all of Huntington; and his children John Aluise and wife Barbara of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Teresa Bartolino and husband John of Robbinsville, NJ, and Richard Aluise of St. Albans, WV. Joseph was blessed with 12 grandchildren – Joseph Aluise, Edward Aluise, Gina Aluise Mitch, Michael Bartolino, Jodi Bartolino Rybak, Jenn Bartolino, David Bartolino, Rich Aluise, Carrie Aluise Bramlee, Thomas Aluise, and Liz Aluise Cline. Joseph also had 15 great-grandchildren. Joseph was the second of ten children, his older brother remained in Italy when his parents immigrated to the United States of America to seek a better life for their family. Because of WW I and other unforeseen circumstances, Tony the oldest Aluise child was not able to join his family in the United States. While just a young boy, Joseph was tutored in Italian so he could communicate with his brother and other family members in Italy. In 1967, he met his brother Tony for the first time, and this meeting helped to reunite the Aluise family in America with their relatives in Italy. Thanks to Joseph's efforts Tony met three of his brothers and two of his sisters, along with several other Aluise family members from the US. Joseph Aluise spent his life as a caretaker and supporter of family and friends and as a loyal and trusted worker. As a Catholic and as a member of the Knights of Columbus, he lived his faith through prayer, devotion, service and fellowship. During his forty-two years at INCO he served his company and fellow workers with integrity and diligence. Joseph was extraordinarily committed to his family, first to parents and brothers and sisters during some very difficult years. While earning only a modest salary, he and his wife Vanda sacrificed in many ways to support the needs of their children and grandchildren. The family would like to thank the Woodlands Retirement Community for the emotional support and personal care that Joseph and Vanda received from their dedicated nursing staff and many other staff members. The family also wishes to acknowledge compassionate care offered to Joseph by Hospice of Huntington. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:00A.M., Monday, November 21, 2011 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Presider will be Monsignor Luciana. Interment will follow at Spring Hill cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Aluise Family Scholarship, Wheeling Jesuit University Advancement Office, 316 Washington Avenue, Wheeling, WV, 26003. The Aluise Family Scholarship Fund was established to provide financial support to St. Joseph's Central Catholic High School graduates who wish to attend Wheeling Jesuit University.
