Charles Thomas Surbaugh, Jr.
(September 20, 1912 - October 15, 2011)



Charles Thomas Surbaugh, Jr. was 99 years and 25 days into his hundredth year. Charles died Saturday, October 15, 2011 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. He was born in Huntington, W.Va. on September 20, 1912 to Charles Thomas Surbaugh, Sr and Lillian Livingston Stanley Surbaugh. After graduation from Huntington High School, he was employed by Owens Illinois Glass Factory for 37 years. During his career, he served as head of the Corrugated, Selection, and Shipping departments. Charles served in the US Navy during World War II. He was an avid tennis player for many years. He and his partners played tennis as partners for 38 years winning the city championship many times. Charles and Clarence Huffman coached the Huntington High School tennis team for several years during the mid 1950's. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Garnette Imogene Canterbury; a sister Mary Frances Henderson (Mrs. Thomas Johnson Henderson Sr.). He is survived by nieces Mary Henderson Hodges (Mrs. J. Churchill Hodges), Linda Henderson Cram (Mrs. Milton E. Cram), Jean Ann Canterbury Rogers, (Mrs. Joe Rogers), Melba Jean Holland; nephews, Thomas Johnson Henderson Jr. (Marilyn Henderson), Edward Jennings Canterbury (Diana Canterbury) and Howard Hogan. Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 20, 2011 at Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary by The Rev'd R. Kevin Kelly. Interment will follow in Woodmere Memorial Park. Friends may call Wednesday 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to Hospice of Huntington. The family wishes to give a special thanks to the staff of Hospice and his niece Diana for all the loving care in Charles's final days.
