Hodges

J. Churchill Hodges, 86, life-time
resident of Huntington, died Monday, September 12, 2011 in the Emogene Dolin
Jones Hospice House. He was born June 9, 1925 in Huntington, son of the late
Dr. Frank Churchill Hodges and Amine Adams Hodges. Churchill attended
Marshall Laboratory School following which he attended Kentucky Military
Institute where he served proudly as Drum Major. He graduated from Marshall
University, earning an A.B. in chemistry in 1948 and a Master's in geography
in 1953. He also received a National Science Foundation Academic Institute
Scholarship at The Ohio State University in 1957-58, and an honorary
doctoral degree from Marshall in 2009. He had a life time interest in
education. Churchill spent 36 years as an educator in Cabell County,
teaching biology at Huntington East High School. He then began serving as
Cabell County's first Supervisor of Science and Mathematics and Director of
Purchasing. He also coached tennis at Marshall. Churchill was past president
of the Huntington Museum of Art and the Huntington YMCA. He also served on
the board of the Marshall University Foundation, Inc., and the Cabell
Huntington Hospital Foundation. A lifetime member of Trinity Episcopal
Church, a member of the Rotary Club of Huntington, the Gypsy Club, City
Club, Noon Club, Guyan Golf and Country Club, Farmington Country Club in
Charlottesville, Va., Order of First Families of Virginia, The Jamestowne
Society, Order of the Crown in America and received the Drinko Distinguished
Service Award in 2004. Churchill is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mary
Henderson Hodges. Together they traveled every continent. He will be greatly
missed by his many friends. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday,
September 16, 2011 at Trinity Episcopal Church by The Very Rev'd R. Kevin
Kelly. Entombment will follow in Woodmere Abbey of Remembrance. Friends may
call Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary. In lieu
of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of Huntington, Marshall
University Foundation, The Huntington Museum of Art, Trinity Episcopal
Church, YMCA or the organization of one's choice.
