Mr. David Gene Akers
(September
17, 1935 - July 14, 2012)
David
Gene Akers,
76, of Huntington, was escorted by Angels to be with Jesus on Saturday, July
14, 2012. He was born September 17, 1935 in Huntington, WV., son of the late
Ernest B. and Mamie Thelma Akers. In
addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Ernest B.
Jr., Carl Lee and wife Joan, and Jimmy Darrel and one sister, Marilynn J.
Bochenek. A devoted husband for 57 years, he married Olive Annette Booth on
March 11, 1955. David served his country
with the National Guard. In younger years he was employed at Heiner's Bakery
but more recently was self employed in the restaurant business. He had the
privilege of working with his son and later his daughter at Rocky Tops
Pizza. His most important job although was that of being a loving Husband,
Daddy and Pa-Pa. He was a member of the Seventh Avenue Baptist Church but in
recent years called First Baptist Church in Kenova his home. He was known
for his jovial spirit, self-sacrificial generosity, compassion for others
and love of his family. He always enjoyed outdoor activities such as
hunting, fishing and golf however gardening was his favorite. In his final
days he received loving and compassionate in home care from his devoted
family and many kind members of the Hospice staff.
David is survived by his loving wife, his daughter Jeannette Lynn
Blankenship and husband Jamie, son David G.
Akers II and his wife Pam. He is also
survived by his four grandchildren, David
Bradley Akers and wife Breanne, Zachary
Gene Akers,
Cassidy Jane Adkins and husband T.J., Whitney Jo Buck and husband Ryan as
well as six great-grandchildren, Logan Akers,
Maveric, Max, Zoey and Jazalyn Adkins, and Bronx
David Buck, all of Huntington. On e special cousin, Patricia Dawson,
and sister-in-law, Kathleen Akers Maynard
and brother-in-law, Norm Bochenek, along with five precious nieces and
seventeen nephews. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. at the First Baptist
Church of Kenova on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 by the Rev. James E. Booth,
David's brother-in-law and by Pastor Steve Willis. Interment will follow in
Docks Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday,
July 17th. at Klingel Carpenter Mortuary.
