Gert Scarr

Gert
Scarr, 88, of Barboursville,
WV, died Tuesday, July 17. She was born in St. Louis, MO September 19, 1923
to the late Sadie and Henry Reichgott. She was raised in Mt. Vernon, NY
where she attended schools before going to New Paltz State Teachers College,
and then graduated from Mills College of Education/Adelphi Univ. in New York
City. Her teaching career took her to Rochester, MN, where she met and
married Dr. David Scarr, a veterinarian in
a nearby small town, West Concord, MN. They were married Feb 15, 1948. She
and her husband raised their 5 children there before moving to Fairfax, VA
in 1967. She taught kindergarten at Pine Spring School in Falls Church, VA
for 13 years. After her retirement in 1981 she continued her volunteer work
at the Red Cross which she began in Minnesota and became very active working
at and organizing blood drives for her temple, Temple Rodef Shalom. She
volunteered at blood drives for 50 years. In addition she volunteered for 25
years for the Red Cross at Yesterday's Rose Thrift Shop (a four organization
project) ever since the day they opened in 1982. She was a co-founder of the
Jefferson Women's Golf League in 1984; she was an active bowler with the
Mantua Merry Markers. She was a member of Temple Rodef Shalom in Falls
Church, VA and on the board of their Sisterhood for many years. In 2008 the
Scarrs moved to Wyngate Senior Living Community in Barboursville, WV. They
joined B'nai Shalom Synagogue in Huntington, WV.
Gert was predeceased by her sister Alice Stern. She is survived by
her husband, David, their 4 sons, Mark (Dorothy Molla) of Lexington, KY, Don
of Woodbridge, VA, Dr. Robert (Sandra McDonald) of Seattle, WA, and Tom
(Patricia Jo) of Huntington, WV, and a daughter Helen of Pinecrest FL, 10
grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 3 step great-grandchildren, 2 sisters,
Louise Endel of North Haven, CT and Marge Sosnik of Winston-Salem, NC as
well as many nieces, and nephews and dear friends. A memorial service will
be held at a later date. Expressions of sympathy can be made to American Red
Cross, American Diabetes Association or a local charity of one's choice. The
family would like to thank the staff at Wyngate, her caregiver and friend
Gail McComas and her doctor Tom Dannels for their loving care and service.
