Phillips Champion Emmons
(February 24, 1931 - May 11, 2015)
Phillips C. Emmons, 84, of
Huntington, died Monday, May 11, 2015 in Cabell Huntington Hospital. He was
born February 24, 1931 in Huntington, a son of the late Arthur Stoddard and
Margarita Champion Emmons. He was also preceded in death by a brother,
Arthur Stoddard Emmons Jr. He was a direct descendant of Huntington’s
Founding Fathers. He was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute in
Engineering. He served in the Army Corp. of Engineers and was a registered
and professional Engineer at INCO and retired from Ashland Oil. He was a
board member for the Huntington Museum of Art, Cabell Huntington Hospital
Foundation, C. L. Ritter Land Co., Warfolk Co., Huntington Urban Renewal
Authority, Huntington Municipal Development Authority and helped create
Pullman Plaza and Kinetic Park. Phil was also a board member of Huntington
Symphony Orchestra and Coin-Harvey House. He was a member of City Club,
Huntington Engineers Club, Rotary Club of Huntington, Gypsy Club, Guyan Golf
and Country Club, YMCA,
West Virginia Land & Mineral Owners Association and The First
Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and Deacon. He is survived
by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Emmons; three children, Phillip C. Emmons Jr. (Sallye
Jo) , Elizabeth Emmons Young (Bruce), Kay Emmons Baker (Norman); five
grandchildren, Phillips C. Emmons III (Meagan), Charlotte Emmons, Caroline
Young, Stoddard Young and Rebekah Baker; one great grandchild Temperence
VanCourt and several nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be held 11:00
a.m. Thursday, May 14, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church by Rev. Dr. John
Minihan and Rev. Skip Seibel. Friends may call Thursday, 10:00 a.m. until
service time and following the service in the church friendship hall.
Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers,
donations can be made to First Presbyterian Church or the organization of
choice.
