John Edwin Sale Jr.
(May 18, 1925 - May 19, 2015)
Funeral services for John E. “Jack” Sale,
90, will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at the Klingel Carpenter
Mortuary by the Rev. Mark Conner, at 2 PM with the family receiving friends
at 1 PM until service time. Burial will be at the Ridgelawn Park in
Huntington, West Virginia. Jack passed away May 19, 2015 in Ardmore,
Oklahoma. He was born in Huntington, West Virginia, where he lived most of
his life. He was the son of John E. and Ethel Sale and brother of Virginia
Giampocaro, all deceased. He retired as Chief of Quality Assurance,
Construction Division of the U.S. Corps of Engineers, where he was employed
for 30 years. He was a member of the Society of American Military Engineers.
He was also a commercial pilot, a past member of the Civil Air Patrol, a
football official for 20 years, a Kentucky Colonel, a World War II Marine
Air Corp veteran, a member of the American Legion, and a past member of the
Sugarwood Golf Club. He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist
Church, serving as trustee and the treasurer for his Sunday School Class. He
worked with boys of the 14th Street Boys Club building Soap Box Derby racers
and was one of the founders of the first Huntington Jaycee’s Soap Box Derby.
After World War II, Jack and his friend George Hanshaw purchased a surplus
Army BT-13 airplane which they flew out of the Huntington Tri State Airport.
They were reported to the FAA for flying such a loud airplane over
Huntington. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Patricia Vass
Sale. He is survived by his son Charles E. Sale and wife Jane of Ardmore,
Oklahoma and his son Richard H. Sale and wife Carol Markstrom of Clarksburg,
West Virginia. He is also survived by grandchildren Megan Caldwell and
husband Dustin of Ardmore, Oklahoma, Zachary Sale and wife Tabitha of
Duncan, Oklahoma, and Karli Shepherd and husband Michael of Ardmore,
Oklahoma, along with great grandchildren Maci, Kate, Reese, Shaeleigh, and
