Obituary

Rebecca Anne McComas
(October 8, 1926 - July 19, 2016)

Rebecca Anne Satterwhite McComas died peacefully at the Woodlands Retirement Community on July 19, 2016 surrounded by her family. A Celebration of Life will be held 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 23, 2016 in the Hampton Room at the Woodlands Retirement Community. Becky was born on October 8, 1926 in Huntington, W.Va. and was the daughter of Henry Dewitt and Janie Gilmer Satterwhite. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, William Wallace McComas. Born in an age when women were not expected to work, Becky nevertheless forged a successful career helping those less fortunate in the state social services industry. However, Becky is better remembered by friends and family for being a true southern lady and all that entails. Her zest for life included being active in the Junior League, numerous bridge leagues, and was always ready for a game of tennis. If she wasn't participating in any of those activities she could probably be found shopping to further her keen sense of style. Becky was also renowned for her culinary and hostess skills. Family, friends, and anyone else who might stop by her home at 324 11th Ave. were always welcome to enjoy a meal or have a drink on the front porch. It was such a warm environment it took on the moniker of "324 club." She and her late husband Bill doted on their five grandchildren, having them spend the night every weekend to enjoy bottomless candy jars, movies and staying up way too late. Perhaps her favorite week of each year was the family beach trip to South Carolina where virtually all of her aforementioned skills were on full display. Survivors include three daughters, Lynne Weston (Rick), Leigh Unites (Joe), and Jane Chafin (John), grandchildren Michael Unites (Sara), Mathew Weston (Amy), Cary Chafin (Nikole), Rebecca Unites and Richard Weston (Talya); and six great-grandchildren.
