Margaret Davis Smith Vass
died August 29th at the Wyngate Senior Living Community in Barboursville, W
Va. Margaret was surrounded by the love of family, friends and the loving
care by the Wyngate staff. Margaret was born April 8, 1923 in Ft. Blackmore,
Virginia to Mabel and George Davis. Graduated from Huntington Schools and
Marshall University Magna Cum Laude where she was an admired teacher for 26
years. She also taught part-time at Ohio University at Ironton and for West
Virginia University extension program. She was President of the Lavalette
Woman’s Club, President of Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Delta Kappa Honorary
Societies. She was a member of the Pilot Club and Civic League. Margaret
was very proud of her 43 years as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary
and 41 years volunteering at the VA Hospital. She was President of the
Marshall Emeritus Club and Elder Emeritus at Central Christian Church.
Margaret loved to paint like her sister Billie and was a Juried Artist.
Beyond all her service and teaching she was extraordinarily beloved as a
mother, grandmother, great grandmother and devoted friend to so many,
including our dear family friend Verity Calendar. Margaret is preceded in
death by her husband, Robert E. Vass, Sr, her first husband Guy Smith and
her sister Billie Keller and her sister Nina Bartley and Fred Davis and
brother Homer Davis. Her children include Jerald Smith of Charleston SC,
Michael Smith (Kathy) of Roseburg, Oregon. Stepchildren include, Robert E.
Vass, Jr. (Elizabeth) of Lewisburg, WV, Robin Beth Lutz of Huntington, WV,
Frank McIntosh Vass of Stuart, Florida and Dr. Molly Vass Lehman (Rob) of
Kalamazoo, Michigan. Grandchildren are Bridget Runyon (Lee) and Kyle Smith
of Charleston, SC, Robert E. Vass, III(Laura Dott)of Lewisburg, WV, Lisa
Burke (Michael) of California, Trey Vass (Jamie) of Huntington, WV, Rowdy
Vass of Nashville, TN, Laura Vass of Stuart, FL and Joey Vass of Huntington,
WV ,Matt Smith (Jana) of California, Molly Miller (Christian) of California,
Betsy Champlin (Chris) of Nevada, Dr. Carrie Sun (Dr. Joe) of New York.
Great- grandchildren include Maggie and Zachary Runyon of SC, Aidan and
Alaina Burke of CA, Emory and Van Vass of WV, Abbie and Evie Smith of CA,
Craig and Jake of NV, Chris and Katie Corpuz of CA, Robert E. Vass IV and
Ellie and Sarah Sun of NY. Visitation will be Friday, September 7 from
4:00-7:00 at Klingel- Carpenter Mortuary, 328 6th Avenue, Huntington,
WV. Funeral services will be at Central Christian Church at 11:00 a.m.,
September 8th officiated by Reverend Jacque Parlato. A lunch will be served
following the service at the church. A private family burial will be at
Spring Hill Cemetery.
