Doors to the Past

Milton

This is a rare photo of Milton's "other" covered bridge, which spanned the Mud River on the James River Turnpike near the historic Union Baptist Church about a mile and a half southeast of the present City of Milton. The bridge was erected from hand-hewn in 1834 by Charles Conner, an early settler of Putnam County. It survived until 1955, but was closed for some time before its demolition and had been replaced by a new, modern bridge. Current plans call for the old abutments of the bridge, which are still visible, to be used for restoring the Milton covered bridge which as removed from its downtown Milton site some two years ago. The children in this photo are: Orvie Lee and Lula Mae Nicholson (Bowling), whose parents are Pauline and the late Orvie Nicholson of Milton. The third child in the photo is an unidentified grandson of the late Gertrude Smales.
