Obituary

Karl Lee “Stew” Stewart , Sr., age 92, of Huntington, WV, died on December 28, 2017, at River’s Bend Health Care Center, South Point, OH. Karl was born January 15, 1925, in Covington, KY to parents Charles and Gertrude Stewart. He was raised during the Depression by his grandparents Seebird and Sally Carpenter of Huntington. At the age of 16, soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Karl enlisted in the US Navy, serving honorably in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters until October 1945. Stewart, long-time Huntington resident, was the subject of an extensive Herald-Dispatch article on Sunday, March 23, 2014. His WWII naval experiences were chronicled in the novel “The Seventh Cruise.” A proud veteran and member of American Legion Post 93, one of the highlights of his latter years was the 2012 Honor Flight he took with his son, Karl Jr. to Washington DC. It was there, he said, that he felt truly respected for his service for the first time in his life. Karl is survived by his wife, Lynn Stewart, of Huntington, nine children: Sandra (Dennis) Gazdecki of Milwaukee, WI, Karl (Christine) Stewart, Jr. of Ripon, WI, Teresa Stewart of Nashville, TN, Pamela Wood of Sun Prairie, WI, Diane Hinkforth of Hartland, WI, Mark (Lynda) Stewart of Fort Atkinson, WI, Linda (Leamon) Wherry of Sacramento, CA, Karla Penman of Tampa, FL, and Sonya (Bill) Berky of Melrose, FL. Karl is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 28+ great and great-great grandchildren, as well as his beloved dachshund and constant companion, Red. Karl is predeceased by his ex-wife and the mother of six of his children, Mary Stewart, of Milwaukee, WI. He is also predeceased by his former wife of 33 years, and mother of three of his children, Jennie Stewart of Huntington. He is also predeceased by his grandson, SSGT Bryan Berky, US Air Force, who died in Afghanistan. There is no funeral service planned, as per Stew’s wishes, but the American Legion Post 93 will conduct a cemetery-site ceremony at a later date at the Kentucky Veteran’s Cemetery Northeast, Grayson, KY, with full military honors. Heartfelt thanks go to the VA Hospital in Huntington, River’s Bend Health Care Center, St. Mary’s Hospital, Cabell Huntington Hospital and to all the health care providers who so tirelessly and selflessly gave of their time and abilities to make his last days comfortable. The family would also like to thank “Stew’s” good friend Gary Hagen and his wife Maryann for their years of selfless friendship.
