Opal Ferrell Cassidy
(

Opal Ferrell Cassidy, 94, of Huntington, died Monday, December 31, 2012 at her home. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, January 4, 2013 at Klingel Carpenter Mortuary by the Rev. Hubert Harvey and Rev. Andrew Wade. Burial will follow in The Ferrell Family Cemetery, Verdunville, WV. Opal was born October 16, 1918 in Verdunville, WV, the daughter of the late Carlos and Roxie Avis Ferrell. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Ernest Maxwell Cassidy in 1975; an infant son in 1953 and another son, Edwin Cassidy in 2003, a grandson, Shay Cassidy in 2011, and by her sisters and brother: Thelma Runyon, Corda Shuff, Troy Ferrell, Lura Ferrell, Irene Ferrell, Iva White, and Sherlie Hale. Opal was blessed to be born into a Loving large family. She worked at Island Creek Coal Company; joined First Christian Church in Logan as a young lady and sang with her beautiful voice in the choir. She met her husband Maxwell and they lived in New Haven, WV, Cabin Creek, WV, Terre Haute, Indiana, and then moved to Huntington in 1962. She was a faithful member of Central Christian Church where she was active in all aspects, particularly The Women's Circle and was President of CWF. She enjoyed gardening and was a member of Maple Leaf Garden Club and enjoyed her friends with her Bridge Club. But foremost, she was a devoted wife, consummate homemaker and loving mother and grandmother. She has been a good and faithful servant and has fought a good fight. She has been called home and her memories will be cherished. Opal is survived by her sister, Naomi Dillard of Huntington; son, Carlos Maxwell Cassidy and wife Janie of Huntington, son, Kenneth Lee Cassidy and wife Billie of Durham, NC, daughter, Mary Catherine and husband Terry Nelson of Hickory, NC; Grandchildren Kristen Zban, Cynthia, Michael, Megan, Alyssa, and Caitlin Cassidy, Stephanie Carter, Christopher, Joseph and Sarah Nelson; seven great grandchildren. The family wishes to express their thankfulness to their mother's caregiver of 13 years Wanda Preston for her faithful constant, loving care. And for the love of Opals neighbors, church family and Wanda's family. The family will receive friends 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home.
