Emil "Al" Hess

Emil "Al" Hess, 88, of Huntington went home to be with the Lord on December 31, 2012 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. Born March 18, 1924 in New York City he had worked for the former W.T. Grant Company from 1948 to 1976. In 1950 he was sent to Huntington to redesign the former Grant store that was located on Third Avenue and installed the city's first escalator. It was there that he met the love of his life, the former Lois Ross who was the store's office manager. They were married in 1952 and returned to New York City where they lived until returning to the Huntington area in 1970. He is preceded in death by Lois after 58 years of marriage, also his parents Arthur and Octavia Hess and Sisters Irene and Eleanor. He is survived by his son Robert (Jannell) and grandchildren Jonathan and Stephanie Hess all of Huntington and a brother Charles Hess of Charlotte, NC.. Nephews Keith Ross of Bellefontaine, Ohio, Mark (Kathy) McPherson of Simsbury, CT. Nieces Peggy Navy and Brenda Runyon of Huntington and Clydena Wagner of Indiana along with a host of close friends and other relatives. He was a veteran of WW II and a proud member of the VFW 9738 Honor Guard for many years. In addition, he was a former member of the Huntington Elks Lodge, Odd Fellows and American Legion Post 16. He had retired from Corbin Limited and was a former member of Christ the King Lutheran church and current member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, January 12th at 11am at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 721 12th Ave., Huntington by the Rev. Jennifer Obermueller. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington, 1101 6th Ave. Huntington, WV 25701.
