Obituary
George Rahall, 92, of
Huntington,
WV, passed away on Sunday
October 14, 2007 at the Emogene Dolen Jones Hospice House, Huntington. He
was born July 28, 1915 in Welch, WV, a son of the late Michael and Malakeh
Bassett Rahall. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Jennings
Rahall; his beloved stepmother, Edna Rahall, who reared him from an early
age; his sister, Nahey Rahall Bassett; and his brother, Philip Rahall. He is
survived by his sisters, Sally Rahall Tweel of
Huntington; and Lorene Rahall David of
Omaha,
NB; his brother, Naseeb Rahall of
Charleston,
WV; his mother-in-law, Mary Jennings of
Cunard,
WV; many nieces and nephews; and numerous
other family members and friends, especially Fred and Elizabeth Kyle of
Huntington,
WV. George graduated from
Woodrow
Wilson
High School in
Beckley,
WV and attended
Roanoke
Business
College. He volunteered
in 1940 to serve in the United States Air Force and served for three years
in the Pacific Arena during WWII. After his honorable discharge, he returned
to
Beckley,
WV, where he went into business
for himself. He married Ellen Jennings on October 8,
1950. He and Ellen moved to
Huntington in the 1960’s, where
he once again operated his own business. Thereafter, he was employed at
Nick’s News and finally retired from the West Virginia Department of
Highways. George was a committed Christian who attended
Highlawn
Baptist
Church where he was an
active member and deacon. Later he became a faithful member of
Fifth
Avenue
Baptist
Church until his death.
George was known for his happy disposition and daily bible reading. George
was active in Democratic politics, being a strong supporter of his relative,
Nick Joe Rahall (D-WV). The family will receive guests in the Parlor at
Fifth
Avenue
Baptist
Church at 1:00 PM on
Thursday, October 18, 2007 to be followed by the funeral service in the
Chapel of the church at 2:00 PM. with Dr. Allen Reasons officiating. George
will be interred at
Woodmere
Memorial Park following
the service. George’s family extends their sincere appreciation and thanks
to hospitalists, Drs. Gilkerson and Duncan, for their kind, compassionate
care of George during his last hospital stay. In lieu of
flowers, the family requests that all donations be made to the George and
Ellen Rahall Endowment Fund at
Fifth
Avenue
Baptist
Church or Hospice of
Huntington.
