Obituary
Hercil Hersten Gartin, 98 of
Fairview,
TN formerly of
Huntington,
WV went to be with the Lord on
Wednesday October 1, 2008. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at
11:00 AM at Beard Mortuary with Rev. Jerry Chapman officiating. Entombment
will follow in
Woodmere
Memorial Park. He was
born March 10, 1910 in
Logan,
WV a son of the late Mack and
Fannie Brumfield Gartin. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death
by his wife, Edith Pearl Gartin and a son, Kenneth Lee Gartin. Hercil was a
police officer, advanced through the ranks to Chief of Police and then
became the 1st Major in the Police Department. He graduated from
the
FBI
Academy in 1941 and was
instrumental in designing the target ranges at
Quantico,
VA. He served two terms as
Cabell County Sheriff, served three terms as
County
Clerk and served as the
interim Sheriff at the age of 90. He also wrote a column in the “Old
Centurion” monthly publication and in 1989 was voted the Outstanding
Democrat of the Year by the WV Democratic Party. He was a former member of
Highlawn
Baptist
Church and
Lewis
Memorial
Baptist
Church he was a current member of
the
First
Baptist
Church,
Fairview,
TN and was a member of the The Odd Fellow
Lodge in
Huntington. Hercil is survived
by his loving daughter, Freda Hurt of Fairview, TN; two granddaughters,
Shawn Hurt Hess and her son, Jake Hess of Fairview; Stephanie Hurt Brodtrick
and her husband, Buzz of Fairview; he is also survived by grandchildren,
Shane, Dirk, Garrett and Sheri Gartin and great grandson, Josh Gartin all of
Huntington and a host of friends. The family will receive friends from
4:30-8:00 PM on Friday at Beard Mortuary.
