Obituary
GENE MARGARET BICKEL HAYDEN, 90, of Huntington, died peacefully at home on December 20, 2011 after a long illness. Gene was born November 26, 1921, in Replete, WV and grew up in Webster Springs, one of seven children of the late Thomas B. and Abigail Skidmore Bickel. She and her late husband, Jack Proffitt Hayden, were the owners of the former Huntington Barber and Beauty Supply Company located in Huntington. Survivors include her son, John P. Hayden of Pittsburgh, PA and five daughters; Susan Hayden of Charleston, Mary McOwen (Mark McOwen), Jackie Hayden (David Lycan) and Jill Smith (Roger Smith), all of Huntington, and Sally Lefevre (Chris Lefevre) of Milton; two sisters, Peggy Miller (Oliver Miller) of Cleveland, OH and Mary Bell Gregory of New Florence, PA; seventeen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Gene’s family would like to extend their appreciation and special thanks to her caregivers, Ruby Ratliff, Christy Spurlock and Bertha Woodyard, and her physician, Dr. Dilip Nair, for their care and compassion during Gene’s illness over the past several years. Service is to be conducted by Dr. Allen Reasons of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 2, 2012 at Beard Mortuary, 30th Street and 3rd Avenue, Huntington, with visitation for family and close friends one hour prior. Burial will follow in Woodmere Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Huntington in Gene’s name.
