Obituary
Velma Smith Neale Toothman, of Huntington, WV, widow of Fred R. Toothman, rejoicing in the presence of the Lord, April 15, 2016. She was born August 25, 1929 in Logan County, WV, daughter of the late Walter Smith and Margie Hager Smith. Velma was a member of Beverly Hills Baptist Church (New Baptist Church), a 50 year member of the Huntington Women's Club, Huntington Museum of Art, past President of the Engineers Auxiliary, past President of the Huntington Child Observation League, and former member of the Guyan Golf and Country Club. She attended Huntington East High School, Marshall Lab School and Marshall University. She enjoyed teaching social graces in West Virginia and judged beauty pageants in West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky. She is preceded in death by her brother Hyman Smith of Huntington, West Virginia and survived by her sister-in-law Dorothy Smith, a brother Wayne Smith of Akron, Ohio. Her nieces include, Margie Smith (daughter Katherine Kapela), Donna Smith and Cyndi (Ken) Wright (sons Jared and Cedric, daughter Lauren). Nephews include, Mark Smith (son Jimmy and daughter Jackie), Wayne (Angela) Smith (daughters Beth and Tesa), Jeff Smith (daughter Sarah) and David (Teresa) Smith (daughter Mackenzie). She was married to the late Bruce Ferguson Neale and had one son Bruce Stephen Neale and wife Letha Holbrook Neale. Her grandchildren include Cara Elizabeth Neale Starkey (son Ranger) and Bruce Ryan Neale and wife Vanessa Neale (sons Nathan and Evan). She has a step son Brent H. Toothman and one step granddaughter Megan Nadine Toothman (Peter) Zaepfel (sons Trooper and Rees). Lovely girls that she considered like daughters Roberta Cavanaugh Van Meter, Deborah Wolfe, Rosa and Dominique Elmore. Her closest friends were; the late Greta Long, the late Willie Marie Willis, Ramona Stewart and Betty Peck. Funeral services will be conducted 2:30 pm Sunday, April 24, 2016, at Woodmere Abbey of Remembrance with Pastor Bill DeMoss officiating. Burial will follow in Woodmere Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm Sunday at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, and the procession will leave the funeral home at 2:00 pm.
