Kathryn McDaniel
August 12, 1926 - May 26, 2010



Kathryn Miller McDaniel, 83, of Shoals, WV passed away on May 26, 2010. She was born on the same Luther family farm (started in 1816) that she lived on all her life. Her great grandmother, Rebecca Stock Luther, attended Marshall Academy in the 1850’s. Her grandmother, Anna Luther Copley, a school teacher, attended Marshall in the 1890’s. Six generations of her family have attended Marshall University. She graduated from Huntington High School in 1944 and finished her Master’s Degree at Marshall. She met her husband Don S. McDaniel, Sr., a fellow Chemistry Major, when he stole a kiss doing lab work. They married in 1947. She is preceded in death by her father, John Hawes Miller, Sr. and mother, Doris Thyra Copley Miller, brother, John Hawes Miller, Jr., as well as her husband, Don S. McDaniel, Sr. She is survived by her sons, Don Shelton McDaniel, Jr. (Melanie) of Big Creek, and David Alan McDaniel (Janie) of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren, Anna R. Jeffcoat (Cody), Kate E. Candillo (Joe), Sara Jane Lilley (Scott), Scott D. McDaniel and Don S. McDaniel III (Aly); two great grandchildren, Caleb Joel Jeffcoat and Joshua Andrew Jeffcoat; a sister, Mary Janice Willis (Bill) of Shoals; a sister-in-law, Maria Teresa Miller of Shoals; and several dear nieces and nephews and a host of close friends and family. Kathryn was a senior chemistry teacher at Huntington High School. She was in the Huntington Women’s Club, President of YWCA, President of the Republican Women of Wayne County, President of the Wayne County Homemaker’s Club, an officer of Kappa Delta Alpha, President of Colonial Lanes Sr. Bowling League, a member of the DAR and was involved in many other clubs, organizations and community projects. She helped found the Doris C. Miller Scholarship for the History Department at Marshall. Visitation is on Saturday May,29th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary with the funeral at 12:00 p.m.; burial in Shoals shall follow. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington, 1101 Sixth Avenue, Huntington, WV 25701, as well as the Doris C. Miller Scholarship Fund at Marshall University.
