Linda Gayle
Messinger
January 18, 1945 - October 1, 2010
Following a valiant fight throughout a long illness,
Linda Gayle Gill Messinger died on October 1, 2010 in
Savannah, GA. Born to the late Lloyd D. and Iva Harless Gill on January 18,
1945, she was a graduate of Huntington East High School and attended
Marshall University. For the past 46 years she has been married to David
Dwight Messinger. David and Linda have two children, Lisa Berne Messinger
Wood of Dover, DE, and David Dwight Messinger, Jr. of Richmond Hill, GA. She
is also survived by a son-in-law, Chris A. Wood and daughter-in-law, Becky
Adkins Messinger. Linda was the proud grandmother of five grandchildren,
Lacey and Lexi Wood and Molly, Clay and Jack Messinger. Other survivors
include her mother-in-law, Eunice Adkins Messinger of Sarasota, FL, and
numerous other extended family members whom she loved very much. Linda was
passionate about volunteerism in numerous non-profit and service
organizations. She was a lifetime member of the Womans Club of Huntington
and the Savannah, GA Woman’s Club. She served as the GFWC nationally as the
Director of Junior Clubs from 1982 to 1984 and was currently serving on the
Strategic Planning Committee. She was an active Rotarian and served as past
president in Richmond Hill, GA. She was executive director for both Literacy
Volunteers of America – WV as well as the Palmetto Project in Charleston,
SC. She was extensively involved in the arts, particularly through her
singing in numerous choirs and frequent solos. Visitation will occur on
Tuesday, October 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Klingel Carpenter Mortuary, 328 6th
Avenue, where the family will receive condolences. The funeral will occur at
11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 6 at Klingel-Carpenter with the Rev. Chris
A. Wood officiating. Burial will occur at Spring Hill Cemetery.
