David Lawrence Newlon
(May 22, 1937 - December 14, 2014)



David Lawrence Newlon, 77, of Huntington passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord on Sunday, December 14, 2014. He was born May 22, 1937 in Huntington, the only child of the late Paul Lawrence and Margaret Newlon. He was known to various friends as "Poochie" or "Pete." He was also predeceased by his brother-in-law, Claude Michael Spalding. David is survived by his wife, Dr. Pamela Gail Newlon; son, Robert Newlon of Lesage; daughter, Mary Newlon of Huntington; daughter and son-in-law, Sheree and Jim Overfelt of Lesage; nephew, Sean Spalding of Wayne County; seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, cousins Fred (Melanie) Herr of Huntington and Barbara (Michael) Platt of Omaha, Nebraska, and a vast number of friends. He was a graduate of Huntington High School, Marshall University, the University of Louisville, and numerous police training institutes and programs. David was a proud veteran of the United States Navy. He worked as a police officer in Huntington and as police chief in Clarksburg and Barboursville. Following his law enforcement career, he worked for the WV Dept. of Human Services and lastly as Chief Investigator for the United States Public Defender's office. He was also a private investigator for a number of years. David was a member of Crescent Lodge #32 AF & AM in Ceredo; Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry - Valley of Huntington; Independent Order of Odd Fellows - Huntington Lodge 64; life member of the BPO Elks - Huntington Lodge 313; life member and Past President of the Fraternal Order of Police - Gold Star Lodge 65; and the Disabled Veterans of America. David was known for his propensity to fight when called for, but also for his great and tender heart. He was always ready to help anyone and was known for his jokes, tall tales, his sense of humor, and being an avid Marshall University football fan. He will be greatly missed by everyone, including his beloved pets. A devout Christian, he was a member of Olive Baptist Church, Huntington. Arrangements are by Klingel Carpenter Mortuary. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary. Funeral services will be held by Pastor Gordon Rutherford at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at the funeral home . Military inurnment services will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, DC
