Betty Curtis Purcell

Betty Curtis Purcell,
92, of Huntington, died Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at her home in the
Woodlands Retirement Community. Betty was born May 29, 1922 in Huntington,
daughter of the late Margaret McComas Purcell and Charles W. Purcell, Sr. In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, William
Purcell. She attended local schools and graduated from Marshall University
Magna Cum Laude with a BS degree in May 1944. Soon afterward, she began work
as a laboratory technician at the University of Richmond Medical College in
Richmond, VA. About 1948, she returned to Huntington to be with her mother
and began working for Dr. Ewen Taylor, later for Dr. Diaz from where she
retired. After retiring, about 1988, she began working at Trinity Episcopal
Church in a mostly volunteer capacity and remained there until 2008. She was
an active volunteer for many Huntington organizations including the Junior
League and Colonial Dames. Survivors include nine first cousins. A memorial
service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2015 at Trinity Episcopal
Church. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorial contributions be
made to a charity of one’s choice.
