John M. "Jack" Chittum

September 22, 1924 - March 11, 2014)



John M. "Jack" Chittum, 89, of Huntington, WV, husband of Doris Tomlinson Chittum, passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2014 in the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014 by the Rev. Bill Haynes at Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary. Entombment will follow in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. Jack was born September 22, 1924 in Huntington, a son of the late Herbert Chittum and Irene Trowbridge Chittum Steele, as well as his step father, Arthur D. Steele. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Margaret "Peggy" Steele Carson and a brother, Arthur D. Steele. Jack graduated from Huntington East High School in 1942 and attended Marshall University. He served his country during WWII in the United States Navy serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. He was a longtime member of the Beverly Hills United Methodist Church. He retired from the U.S. Railway Mail Service and ultimately retired from Smith Floor Covering. Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Doris; his sons Marc of Fairfax, VA and Mike of Boone, NC; grandchildren, Tyler Brooks and Tonya Chittum; two great-grandchildren, Abby and Connor; two sisters, Marjorie Steele Streib and Jane Steele McLeod, both of Huntington. It is suggested memorial contributions be made to the Beverly Hills United Methodist Church of Huntington. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2014 at the funeral home.
