Ellery Guy Greathouse
(November 3, 1921 - September 15,
2014)
Ellery Guy (“Bud”) Greathouse
passed away from natural causes on September 15, 2014 at his home in the
Whispering Willows Retirement Inn, Brandon, FL at the age of 92. He was born
in Washington, PA on November 3, 1921. He was preceded in death by his
parents Guy Ellery Greathouse and Juanita Polan Greathouse, his wife Mary
Maxine Overturf Greathouse, sisters Elsie Greathouse Paul and Jeanne Amos
Peterson, brother William E. Amos, Jr., and granddaughter Monica Hewlett.
Bud was raised by his maternal aunt (Dora Polan Amos) and her husband
(William E. Amos) who are both deceased. He is survived by his son Dr. David
G. Greathouse (Charlotte), San Antonio, TX; daughter Nancy Greathouse
Hewlett (Rev Carl), Valrico, FL; grandsons David G. Greathouse II (Tracy),
San Antonio, TX and Dr. Jeffrey A. Greathouse (Meme), Albuquerque, NM; and
granddaughters Mareda Hewlett Westerman (John), Seffner, FL, Melanie Hewlett
Hutton (Quintin), Bradenton, FL, and Marcia Hewlett Martin (Rene), Baton
Rouge, LA. Bud is also survived by four great-grandchildren, David G.
Greathouse III and Brooke McKenzie Greathouse, San Antonio, TX; Charity
Nichole Hayes, Seffner, FL; Ann S. Greathouse, Albuquerque, NM, and Roman N.
Martin, Baton Rouge, LA. Bud graduated from Washington High School where he
was active in football, basketball and track, and Washington and Jefferson
University where he majored in education. He served in the United States
Army medical department as an operating room technician during World War II
including overseas assignments in North Africa and Italy. Bud worked for Joy
Manufacturing Company (coal mining machinery) for 35 years with assignments
in Fairmont, WV and Huntington, WV, retiring in 1982. Bud and Maxine moved
to Huntington WV in 1959 and he was an active member of the YMCA, Senior
Olympics Men’s Basketball program, and Huntington Men’s Slow-Pitch Softball
Association. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Enslow
Park Presbyterian Church in Huntington. Bud was a loving husband, father,
and grandfather and will be missed by all those whose lives he touched. The
family thanks the Whispering Willows Retirement Inn staff for their care and
compassion. Arrangements entrusted to the Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary,
Huntington, WV. A private family service and internment will occur at the
White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville, WV. In lieu of flowers, the
family requests that donations to the charity of your choice may be made in
his memory.
