William Verlon Smith
(April 19, 1918 - June 27, 2010)



William Verlon Smith, 92, of Huntington, WV, went to be with the Lord Sunday, June 27, 2010, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Huntington. He was born April 19, 1918 in Huntington a son of the late William Audley and Florence Geer Smith. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Nancy E. Smith; three sisters, Rosalie Wippel, Diana Smith and Barbara Rose; and two brothers, Vinson Smith and Audley Alfred Smith. He was retired from Ensign Electric; was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II; and was a member of the American Legion. He was a member of the Twenty-Sixth Street Baptist Church for 60 years. Survivors include: two sisters, Jewel Evelyn Wilds of Lavalette, WV and Dorothy Louise Woods of Huntington; a brother-in-law, Richard Wippel of Huntington; a sister-in-law, Linda Smith of Huntington; and numerous nieces and nephews all of whom are special, including Deborah Ball and her husband, Donnie of Barboursville, Mark Wippel and his wife Anita of South Point, OH and Richard Wilds and his wife, Sally of Fort Lauderdale, FL. Funeral services will be conducted 12:30 PM Thursday, July 1, 2010, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with his nephew, Pastor Barry Smith, officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Huntington, with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 9738. Friends may call from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM Thursday at Chapman's Mortuary.
