Henry Clay Ashworth 94, of Huntington WV went home to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday August 16, 2015 at Woodlands Retirement Community. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Freda Viola Stapleton Ashworth. They were residents of the Woodlands Retirement Community. Clay was born in Hamlin, WV on July the 27th 1921, to Charles C. and Swanee Ashworth now deceased. Clay served as a Tech. Sergeant in the Marine Corps as Construction Chief for the Marine Air Wing, during WW II in the Far East. On April 28, 2014, Clay was honored by the Huntington, Marine Corps League in a Ceremony at the Woodlands, where Denny L. Wood, Commandant for the local Detachment # 340 presented the "Distinguished Citizen Award" which was in appreciation and gratitude for meritorious service in the interest of the United States of America, the United States Marine Corps and the Marine Corps League. Clay held the position as Superintendent for Neighborgall Construction Company for 40 years. He was a faithful and dedicated member of the First Church of the Nazarene for 68 years. He served as a Trustee, Board member, Choir member, and sang in a Quartet for many of those years. He was preceded in death by one brother, Norris Ashworth and one sister Elaine Adkins. The Ashworth's have two children Mary Catherine (Kaye) Martin and husband Owen of Cleveland, TN. and Roger Clay Ashworth and wife Jan, whom are both deceased. Their grandchildren include Jeffrey Martin of Pickens S.C. Stephen Martin of Cleveland, TN, John Long and adopted grandson Michael Long of Rochester, Michigan, and Kristen Thornton of Tega Cay, S.C. They also have six great-grandchildren. Family and friends will be received at Chapman's Mortuary on Saturday August 22, 2015 from 10:00 until 11:00 AM. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday August 22, 2015 at Chapman's with Dallas Moore officiating. Pallbearers are Jeffrey and Stephen Martin, John and Michael Long, grandsons of the Ashworth's, and Bob and Wesley Simpkins, close friends of the family. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Marine Corps League Detachment 340 and Veterans Honor Guard Post 16 will conduct military graveside rites. Flowers are welcomed or Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to: Ministry to the Military, Att. Jo Scott, P.O Box 5438, Cleveland, Tenn. 37320. (Ministry to the Military is a Christian Ministry providing a 'Home Away from Home' for Military personnel and their family members deployed in foreign countries.)
