Obituary

Kyle G. McMullen
(May 13, 2015)

Kyle G. McMullen, C.P.A., Professor Emeritus, 84, of Ona, WV entered into the arms of his Heavenly Father, May 13, 2015. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis P. and Mearl B. McMullen. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Ava, brother William (Janet) of Huntington, children Janet (Gary) Sumpter, Todd (Jackie) McMullen and Carol (Bob) Wilcox all of Huntington. “Graddy”, as he was affectionately called, is also survived by grandchildren Tim White, Tara (Brian) Blinn, Darrah (Jon) Cain, Jared Fredeking and Kylee McMullen, all of Huntington. Jodi (Josh) Fromholt of Franklin, OH and Jacob (Rachel) Fredeking of S. Charleston, WV. Great grandchildren Ryan and R. J. Kelly, Piper and Bridget White, Braden Fredeking, Avaleen and Parker Cain, Roman Fredeking, Lilian Fromholt and many other cherished family members.  Kyle grew up in Huntington, where he was an Eagle scout graduating from Huntington High School in 1948. He began his secondary education at Bethany College to pursue a career as a minister. He then realized that he was better suited for a lifelong career in accounting and teaching. At this point he transferred to Marshall University. After earning his undergraduate degree, he worked on his Master’s and then on his Doctorate while striving to become a Certified Public Accountant. After accomplishing this, he worked for U.S. Steel in Lorain, OH, for a short period and then decided that he needed to return to Huntington. He then worked at Com-Nav and worked with his father in public accounting. He had an opportunity to teach at Marshall part time and that led to his 34 year career teaching with a specialization in tax accounting. Kyle served as President of the Huntington Chapter of West Virginia C.P.A.’s. One of his most gratifying moments occurred when his former students set up the “Kyle G. McMullen Scholarship Fund” in his honor. Upon retirement he was awarded the status of Professor Emeritus.  Kyle was actively involved in many charities and organizations and was especially fond of ECCHO where he spent his time volunteering during his later years. He was a member of Madison Avenue Christian Church for more than 75 years and served various leadership positions within the church. He immensely enjoyed his time singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. Every fall weekend you could find him at a Marshall football game or in front of the TV watching college football. In addition, fishing was a true passion! Kyle enjoyed introducing any and all to the art of telling the story of how big that fish really was!  Visitation will be held at Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington, WV on Friday, May 15 between 6-8 P.M. Services to be conducted at Chapman’s on Saturday, May 16th at 1 P.M. with Pastor Jamie Gump officiating. Burial to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.  The family would like to express their gratitude to the Hospice staff, especially those at the Hospice House of Huntington. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to the “Marshall University Foundation” 519 John Marshall Drive, Huntington, WV 25703 with “Kyle McMullen Scholarship” in the memo, or to ECCHO 1038 Smith St., Milton, WV 25541.
