Obituary

Granville Lloyd Scarberry
(January 9, 1924 - May 7, 2015)



On May 7, 2015 Granville Lloyd Scarberry went home to meet his Lord. He was born on January 9, 1924. He was proceeded in death by two wives Loretta Mae Burns who died on September 8, 1964, Joyce Ann Burns who died on May 1, 2015, his parents Irvin Scarberry and Callie McKinley Scarberry, and also six brothers and one sister; Clyde Brooks, Clarence Brooks, Arden Brooks, Ralph Scarberry, Randall Scarberry, Paul Scarberry, Opal Edmunds; additionally one grandson, Joseph Simmons, who died in 2003. As a young man he served proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Combat Engineer. His unit was the only one that received five Combat Stars and he personally received a Purple Heart. After World War II he joined several organizations that supported and assisted veterans. These organizations include: VFW (Veteran of Foreign Wars) 9738, American Legion 16, DAV (Disables American Veterans), as well as The Red Mens Lodge. He was employed at H.K. Porter/Connors Steel for 37 years. After retiring, he returned to the workplace as an employee of Cabell Huntington Health Department for 28 years. His Sunday's were spent teaching class at Thomas Memorial Free Will Baptist Church.
He is survived by one sibling a sister, Barbara Stewart. He is also survived by children by his first wife, Loretta: Irvin (Nellie) Scarberry, Callie Webb, Randall (Linda) Scarberry, Bonita (Bill Leffingwell)Porter, Brenda (Delbert) Smith, and Teresa (Nate) Ward. By his second wife, Joyce, there are 2 children: Granville Scarberry II and stepson, Larry Adkins. He had 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and 6 great, great grandchildren. There are also numerous nieces and nephews. He was loved by all who met him. Many children who were not related called him “Great Paw Paw”. Friends and loved ones are truly too numerous to count. Visitation will be at Chapman's Mortuary Friday, May 8, 2015 from 6 to 8 p.m Funeral will be Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Thomas Memorial Freewill Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in Woodmere Memorial Park. There will be a one hour visitation before the service at the church. Officiating ministers are Elder Nathaniel Ward, Pastor Bobby Fowler, Rev. Luther Morgan, and Rev. Ernest Crabtree will be officiating. The Veterans Honor Guard Post 16 will conduct military graveside rights.
