Herbert Monnig
(December 20, 1920 - October 27, 2009)
JAMES HERBERT MONNIG, SR, 88, passed away peacefully
Tuesday. October 27, 2009, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in
Winston-Salem, NC from Alzheimer's Disease. He was born in Huntington on
December 20, 1920 to the late Louis J. and Kathryn Monnig. Jim graduated
from St. Joseph High School in Huntington and was a long-time member of St.
Joseph Catholic Church. He proudly and honorably served his country during
WWII with the Hq. Co. 5"' Army, infantry, in several battles and campaigns
in Italy. He achieved the Army's highest rank for non-commissioned officers
- Chief Warrant Officer IV and was retired from the Army Reserve. After
retiring from the Post Office in Huntington, he and Nancy lived at Yaupon
Beach, NC for 12 years before returning to Huntington in 1989. Jim loved
Marshall University football, Duke basketball, walking in Ritter Park,
painting, gardening, sitting on his front porch and buying anything "made in
America". He faithfully displayed the American flag daily, weather
permitting. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Louis,
Tom and John and sisters, Frances and Betty, his first wife, Mary Alyce Hall
in 1974, his only son, James Monnig, Jr in 2000 and his second wife, Nancy
June Bonar Arnold, May 2009. He is survived by his daughters Mary Kathryn
(Roy) Edwards of Clemmons, NC and Becky (Jeff) Scott of Bozeman, MT,
stepchildren Debbie (John) Wesselman of Florence, KY, Joel (Myra) Arnold of
Florence, KY and Clyde (Sandy) Arnold of Covington, KY, 12 grandchildren and
13 great grandchildren and his grand dogs, Grant, Oscar and Cameron and
grand cat, Tabby Faye plus 3 very special 4-legged neighbors, Lu, Maggie and
LB. The family would like to extend sincere appreciation to a special
friend, Linda Hensley, who was always there for us and helped in so many
ways, to Ann Sherman, for her many kindnesses and conversations with Jim,
Jim's special neighbors, Wanda, Karen, Jim and Tom who looked in on him and
worried about him the past few months, to the caring staff at Mallard Ridge
Assisted Living in Clemmons, NC and to the compassionate medical personnel
at Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Visitation will be Friday, October 30,from
5 to 7 PM at Chapman Mortuary and a Mass of Christian burial will be
conducted Saturday, October 31, at 10 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church by
Monsignor Lawrence Luciana. Cremation has been chosen. Memorial gifts may be
made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem,
NC 27103. "You were a good and honorable man, a loving and caring husband, a
beloved father who taught his children through example about hard work,
accountability, independence and family values." Now, you have journeyed
from this world to the next and we know you will live in it the way you
lived in this one - your way.
