REBA ASBURY FITZGERALD
REBA ASBURY FITZGERALD, 88, Of Monroe, North Carolina, formerly of Huntington, West Virginia, died April 23, 2009, at the Lake Park Nursing Home, Indian Trail, North Carolina. Born March 26, 1921, she was the daughter of Martha and Roy Asbury of Madison, West Virginia. Reba was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Wayne, sisters Alice Asbury and Helen Asbury Yeager, and brother Roy Asbury Jr. She is survived by her four children: Jerry Fitzgerald and wife Debra of Weddington, North Carolina; Thomas Fitzgerald and wife Susan of Bluffton, South Carolina; Connie Weingrad and husband Jerry of Columbus, Ohio; and Toney Fitzgerald and wife Linda of Dallas, Texas. Grandchildren include: Wayne M. Fitzgerald II of Charlotte, North Carolina; Beth Anne Kasper of Asheville, North Carolina; Robert Whitney of Kernersville, North Carolina; Roger Brooks of Bluffton, South Carolina; Andrew Weingrad of Columbus, Ohio; and Morgan, Jonathan and Jacob Fitzgerald of Dallas, Texas. Great-grandchildren include Taylor, Brooklyn and Robbie Whitney of Kernersville, North Carolina. She is also survived by nephew Ken Norcross and family of Indian Trail, North Carolina. Reba graduated from Marshall University and while in attendance she was crowned "Miss Marshall 1941." Reba was also crowned "Miss Boone County 1939" as a high school senior. She was the principal owner of Fitzgerald Automotive and Truck Company when she earned the title of West Virginia's "Business Person of the Year 1976" and was presented the award by President Gerald R. Ford during a ceremony in Washington D.C. Always an entrepreneur, during retirement Reba founded and operated Century 21 Landmark Realty, also located in Huntington, West Virginia. Reba was a charter member of Pea Ridge Baptist Church and an active member of the Altrusa Club. In 1990 Reba relocated to Monroe, North Carolina, where she was an active member of First Baptist Church of Monroe. She served in several church leadership positions including a term as a Deacon. Reba loved to cook, garden and entertain. Reba's greatest love was her family and children. She will especially be remembered for her devotion to care for her mother and brother, Roy Asbury Jr. Reba cared and tended to Roy Jr., an invalid, while she herself was in nursing home care. Friends may call from 6-8 PM on Sunday, April 26, 2009, at HENSON MORTUARY, BARBOURSVILLE. Graveside services will be conducted at 10:00 am on Monday, April 27, at Ridgelawn Cemetery, Route 60 East, Huntington, West Virginia, with Rev. Bob Johnson officiating.
