Betty Watters Smith
January 19, 1921 - February 15, 2010



Betty Watters Smith, a loving Mother and Grandmother passed away in her sleep at the Sunbridge Nursing and Rehab Center, Dunbar W.Va. Monday February 15, 2010. She was born in Huntington January 19, 2010 the daughter of the late Mr. Conley Watters and Nelle Carter Watters. She graduated from Huntington High and Marshall Collage with a degree in business and administration she later attended The University of Pittsburgh and received her master’s in Counseling from Marshall University. She was a devout member of Trinity Episcopal Church and also of the Woman's Club of Huntington. She married Stanley J. Smith of Huntington and they missed their 50th wedding Anniversary by one month, Mr. Smith passed away May 1st 1997. An excellent equestrian at the age of ten she showed her favorite horse Playfella. They won the "Big Blue" and "Loving Cup" for first place in the Tri State Junior League Horse Show. Her love of horses continued as she provided a horse for her daughter Elizabeth and later for her grandson Max. She retired as teacher and counselor in the Cabell County School System after over 30 years. She was also preceded by her sister Jane Dortch. She is survived by her only child Elizabeth (Betsy) Smith Gottlieb of Charleston; one grandson Max Carter Gottlieb of Charleston and by nieces Constance Dortch of Pa. and Carol Lerhman of Ca. Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday at Trinity Episcopal Church by The Very Rev’d R. Kevin Kelly. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. Friends may call Noon until service time in the Church Parlor. Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family would like to express their gratitude to their special family friend, Anna Macri and her caregivers. She was an inspiration to the children she taught and will be missed by her family and friends.
In lieu of flowers the family request contributions be made to the Animal Shelter of your choice.
