Henry Garland
Proctor, Jr.
(December 12, 1918 - March 26, 2011)
Henry Garland Proctor, Jr, 92, passed
away on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was born
on December 12, 1918, in Richmond, Virginia, and was the son of the late
Frances and Henry Proctor. He was the past President of Huntington Awning
and Patio Shop, Inc. He was a lifelong resident of Huntington and graduated
from Huntington High School and Marshall University where he served as
President of Phi Tau Alpha Fraternity. Henry was a member of Noon Club, City
Club, and also served as President of Huntington Kiwanis Club, Chairman of
the Salvation Army Advisory Board, and was the first Honored Life Member of
the Board of Canvas Products Association, Zone 7, in 1999. A lifelong member
of Trinity Episcopal Church, he served as Senior Warden, Church School
Superintendent, and Parish Key Man. In addition to his parents, Henry was
preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Helen Hamill Proctor, sisters and
brother, Lucy Digges Peoples, Katherine C. Proctor, and Charles C. Proctor.
Henry is survived by his four children and their spouses: Eugenia (Genie)
and John Gerdes of Lewisburg, PA, Thomas and Catherine Proctor of
Huntington, Lucy and Gerard Dohar of West Farmington, OH, Henry III (Hank)
and Jeanne Proctor, of Columbia Station, OH; seven grandchildren and their
spouses: Thomas Scott Proctor, Joseph Keith Proctor, Benjamin Proctor Gerdes
(Jennifer Hayashida), Ellen Virginia Proctor Gerdes, Timothea Garland
Proctor Letson (Patrick Nelligan), Jacqueline Therese Proctor, Henry Garland
Proctor IV; one great-granddaughter, Miyo Agnes Gerdes-Hayashida; one
sister-in-law, Judy Hamill; and 14 nieces and nephews and their families.
Funeral services will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 520 11th Street,
Huntington, on Thursday, March 31 at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at Woodmere
Memorial Park. Friends may call at 3:30 to 7:00 pm, Wednesday, March 30 at
Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary or after the service at 4:30 to 5:30 pm on
Thursday, March 31 at The Woodlands. In lieu of flowers, the family requests
that donations be made to The WV Alzheimer’s Association, 1111 Lee St. East,
Charleston, WV 25301 or Trinity Episcopal Church.
