Scott Woods
(July 25, 1915 - March 23, 2011)
Kitty Scott Darlington Woods, beloved
wife of Luther E. Woods for 69 years, died Wednesday, March 23, 2011. Born
July 25, 1915 in Huntington, she was the daughter of the late U.V.W.
Darlington, Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and Virginia
Bourne Darlington, both Kentucky natives. She graduated from Marshall
College in 1938 and received a Bachelor of Library Science degree the
following year from Emory University. She was the first librarian of the
former Huntington East High School. Kitty was a volunteer for many years at
Cabell Huntington Hospital from the day it opened in 1956. She was a member
of Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church since 1925, an alto in the
Sanctuary Choir for many years and a loyal member of the Tuesday prayer
group. She had the vision to establish the church library in 1957and
cataloged many of the volumes present in the library today. A special joy
was friendships made during winters spent in Atlantis, Florida with her
husband after learning to play golf later in her life. She was also an
associate member of the Royal Poinciana Chapel in Palm Beach, Florida. She
was preceded in death by a sister, Lydia Clark Bosworth, two brothers, Urban
V.W. Darlington and Julian T. Darlington and a sister-in-law, Betty Woods
Daniel. She is survived by her husband, Luther E. Woods, two daughters, Sue
D. Woods, Huntington, and Kitty W. (Martin) O’Donnell, Indianapolis, IN. She
was grandmother to Dr. Patrick W. (Allison) O’Donnell, St. Louis Park, MN,
Michael J. (Mary) O’Donnell, Evanston, IL, and Kathleen Scott O’Donnell,
Indianapolis, IN, great-grandmother to Caroline and Garrett O’Donnell of St.
Louis Park, MN, Aunt Kitty to nieces Virginia B. Darlington, Memphis, TN and
Patricia M. Darlington, Augusta, GA, and special family to Betsy and Michael
Gerber of Huntington. Funeral service will be held 3 p.m. at Johnson
Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jack Lipphardt and the Rev. Sue
C. Jarrett on Sunday, March 27, 2011 with visitation from 2 p.m. until
service time. Private entombment will follow at Woodmere Memorial Park. A
special thanks to wonderful caregivers, Becky Dingess, Margaret Hagley,
Loumedia Holly and Sallie Smith, as well as Jo Ghiz, Nurse, with Hospice of
Huntington. In lieu of flowers it is suggested that memorial gifts be made
to Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church for the library or Music
Scholarship Endowment Fund, Hospice of Huntington or the Darlington
Scholarship Fund, Office of Development at Kentucky Wesleyan College, 3000
Frederica Street, Owensburg, Kentucky 42301, for the education of students
preparing for ministry. Klingel Carpenter Mortuary is in charge of
arrangements.
