Kitty Scott Darlington Woods, beloved wife of Luther E. Woods for 69 years, died Wednesday, March 23, 2011. Born July 25, 1915 in Huntington, she was the daughter of the late U.V.W. Darlington, Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and Virginia Bourne Darlington, both Kentucky natives. She graduated from Marshall College in 1938 and received a Bachelor of Library Science degree the following year from Emory University. She was the first librarian of the former Huntington East High School. Kitty was a volunteer for many years at Cabell Huntington Hospital from the day it opened in 1956. She was a member of Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church since 1925, an alto in the Sanctuary Choir for many years and a loyal member of the Tuesday prayer group. She had the vision to establish the church library in 1957and cataloged many of the volumes present in the library today. A special joy was friendships made during winters spent in Atlantis, Florida with her husband after learning to play golf later in her life. She was also an associate member of the Royal Poinciana Chapel in Palm Beach, Florida. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lydia Clark Bosworth, two brothers, Urban V.W. Darlington and Julian T. Darlington and a sister-in-law, Betty Woods Daniel. She is survived by her husband, Luther E. Woods, two daughters, Sue D. Woods, Huntington, and Kitty W. (Martin) O’Donnell, Indianapolis, IN. She was grandmother to Dr. Patrick W. (Allison) O’Donnell, St. Louis Park, MN, Michael J. (Mary) O’Donnell, Evanston, IL, and Kathleen Scott O’Donnell, Indianapolis, IN, great-grandmother to Caroline and Garrett O’Donnell of St. Louis Park, MN, Aunt Kitty to nieces Virginia B. Darlington, Memphis, TN and Patricia M. Darlington, Augusta, GA, and special family to Betsy and Michael Gerber of Huntington. Funeral service will be held 3 p.m. at Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jack Lipphardt and the Rev. Sue C. Jarrett on Sunday, March 27, 2011 with visitation from 2 p.m. until service time. Private entombment will follow at Woodmere Memorial Park. A special thanks to wonderful caregivers, Becky Dingess, Margaret Hagley, Loumedia Holly and Sallie Smith, as well as Jo Ghiz, Nurse, with Hospice of Huntington. In lieu of flowers it is suggested that memorial gifts be made to Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church for the library or Music Scholarship Endowment Fund, Hospice of Huntington or the Darlington Scholarship Fund, Office of Development at Kentucky Wesleyan College, 3000 Frederica Street, Owensburg, Kentucky 42301, for the education of students preparing for ministry.
