Mr. Herbert Eiselstein
(March 15, 1919 - May 10, 2011)



Herbert Louis Eiselstein was born in Pomeroy, Ohio, March 15, 1919. He passed away May 10, 2011 in Huntington, WV. He was a son of the late Theodore and Florence Sauer Eiselstein. Also, he was preceded by a brother, William Edward "Jim" Eiselstein. He moved to Huntington when he was 10 years old. Graduated Huntington High in 1937 and attended the University of Cincinnati. He worked his entire career at Inco Alloys International and retired as Vice President of Technology, Research and Development (now Special Metals). He was 93 years old. He was in the Navy during World War II and taught radar electronics. He has been happily married to Maryellen Wise for 66 years. His awards and honor were numerous. He was the University of Cincinnati Distinguished Alumni and was elected a fellow of the American Society for Metals. In 1988 the superalloy industry recognized his contributions by dedicating the Sixth International Symposium on Superalloys and the 1989 Symposium on Inconel 718 to Herbert L. Eiselstein for his contributions involving alloy design, development, and processing. He was elected to membership to the Greater Huntington Wall of Fame in 1996. His inventive genius was responsible for many nickel-base superalloys that make commercial air safer and more economical leading to advances in aircraft engines; rocket and space vehicles; electrical power generation; and production of chemical and petrochemical products. These alloys are also used in everyday applications such as healing elements for electric stoves and other consumer products. He was very inquisitive and had a great interest in many areas including science and history. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Maryellen and three children: June Eiselstein and husband Evan, of Salisbury, MD, Larry Eiselstein and wife Barbara, of Atherton, CA; Carol Eiselstein of New Bedford, MA, and the three grandchildren Lisa Eiselstein, Redwood City, CA, Laura Alcaraz, of Redwood City, CA, and Alex Eiselstein of Cedar Rapids, IA, and one great grandchild, Nahla Alcaraz of Redwood City, CA 2 nieces and nephew Kimberly Grimm and husband Larry of Southpoint, Ohio, Elizabeth "Libby" Williams and husband Doug, Westminster MD, Charles R. Wise and wife Diane of Ellicott City Md. and a brother-in-law –Charles W. Wise and wife Margaret Ann of Westminister, Md. Hobbies included photography, reading, and gardening. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank Hospice of Huntington for their excellent care and support, and Right at Home, John and Cathy Queen for the outstanding service to the family. We give thanks for their kindness and compassion, especially to Francis, Missy, Angela, Tanya and LeAnne.
