Obituary

Coleman Goodman
(October 15, 1934 - May 2, 2011)

Coleman Goodman, 76, of Milton died Monday, May 2 after a short illness. He was born Oct. 15, 1934 in Huntington to Norma Daugherty and Emmett Coleman Goodman. He graduated from Huntington High School, attended Marshall College and graduated from West Virginia University with a bachelor’s degree in business/accounting. He was a lifetime member of the Marshall and West Virginia University Alumni Associations and Co-Chair of the Huntington dinner committee for the Mountaineer Athletic Club.

A lifelong Mountaineer Fan, he held season tickets for Mountaineer football dating back to the days of old Mountaineer Field. Many would say he bled blue and gold. He cheered for the Mountaineers at numerous bowl games, and when it became difficult for him to travel, he could be found in his easy chair for every televised game.

He was an ardent member of the National Rifle Association, and a lover of history. He enjoyed visiting battlefields and reading about the Civil and World Wars. Along the way he built a rather large collection of rifles, Lionel trains and railroad lanterns.

He was a deacon and elder in Milton, Teays Valley and other Presbyterian churches. He served on numerous committees for the Presbytery of West Virginia. He touched many lives as a Commissioned Lay Preacher serving pulpit supply for Presbyterian churches throughout the Huntington and Charleston area.

He began his career as a public accountant at Armco Steel in Ashland, Ky. After working for several companies in Ohio, Virginia and Missouri, he returned in 1976 to Huntington to open his own accounting firm. He retired in 2004 from AC&S of Nitro, but continued doing consulting and tax preparation until his death. Additionally, he served on the Salt Rock Public Service District Sewer board.

He was a member of Beni- Kedem Shrine Temple of Charleston and a Mason of the Aurora Lodge 0048 in Portsmouth, Ohio. He received honorable discharges from the Kentucky and Virginia National Guards, and was recognized as a Kentucky Colonel.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy Jones Goodman; a son and daughter in-law, Mitchell Coleman and Allyson Bird Goodman; a daughter, Rebecca Anne Goodman and three grandchildren, Danielle Kay, Drew Mitchell and Dianna Lynne Goodman. He is preceded in death by his parents and a step-mother, Dorothy Busick Goodman.

Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, May 9, 2011 at Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary, 328 6th Avenue, Huntington. Interment will follow in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Friends may call Monday 11:00a.m until service time at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Organization of One’s choice.
