Obituary

David Michael Burns
(August 25, 1943 - November 2, 2014)

David Michael “Mike” Burns was cured of cancer at the Emogene Dolan Hospice House on November 2nd 2014, surrounded by the love of his life, his wife Carolyn and daughters Michelle and Leslie. Born in Huntington on August 25th 1943 he graduated from St Joseph High School in 1961. He proudly served as a Navy Corpsman in Viet Nam from 1965-67. Assigned to the USS Sanctuary, his actions led to the awarding of the bronze star for valor amongst other commendations. Entering retail grocery management on his return he rose to senior positions including regional manager at Kroger before owning two stores of his own. Eventually disabled by illness dating to his Viet Nam exposure, he fulfilled his lifelong ambition to complete his education, obtaining his associate degree from his beloved Marshall University in 2007. Always supportive of his fellow veterans, he volunteered many hours in their service even after his own disabilities took their toll.  Predeceased by his parents Cecile and William he is survived by Carolyn, children Michelle Woomer (Roger), Leslie Ballengee (Dewey), Amanda Lagozzino, William Burns (Cynthia), and Joshua Burns, grandchildren Corey, Ashley, Cody, Quinnlyn, Zoe, Zack and Wesley, his sisters Linda Harrison (Charlie), Patty Porter (Colin Hall), nieces Rachel Porter (Michael Roberts) and son Porter Roberts and Jennifer Crouch (Scott) and son Leo Earl. Also Carolyn’s large family including granddaughters Brittiany and Chelsea and great granddaughters Rilee (his godchild) and Ryann. Visitation Thursday the 6th from 6.00 to 8.00 at Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary, Mass of Christian Burial at St Joseph’s Catholic Church officiated by Father Dean Borgmeyer and Monsignor Lawrence Luciana Friday at 9.30. At his request, he will be laid to rest with his band of brothers at the Donel Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery in Dunbar at 11.15 on Friday.
