Sharon Sue Gothard Clay
(August 2, 1939 0 June 24, 2018)



Sharon Sue Gothard Clay, 78, of Barboursville, passed away Sunday, June 24, 2018. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 28, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, with Dr. David Lemming officiating. Burial will be in White Chapel Memorial Gardens.  She was born August 2, 1939, in Barboursville. Sharon was a life long member of the Church of Christ and attended Lewis Memorial Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Barboursville High School and received her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Education from Marshall University. A former elementary teacher, Sharon was a retiree from the Cabell County Board of Education. Sharon loved the educational aspect of developing young minds and the relationships she forged with her students and their parents. She loved so much the opportunity she and Cade had to travel within the U.S. and abroad.  Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Hazel (Burks) Gothard; her brother, Don Gothard; and a nephew, Brent Gothard.  She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Howard "Cade" Clay; daughter, Cindy (Eddie) Scarberry of Hurricane; son, Greg (Cathy) Clay of Scott Depot; grandchildren, Dr. Matthew (Kathleen) Scarberry, Kristin Scarberry, Evan Clay and Esten Clay; and four great-grandchildren, Juliet, Leeson, Isabel and Hattie Scarberry. Additional survivors include sister-in-law, Carole Gothard, niece Donna Whites, and nephew, Mark (Trilby) Gothard, all of Texas.  Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville.  Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Huntington. The family would like to thank the entire staff of Midland Meadows for their loving support and excellent care, 26th Street Church of Christ, Lewis Memorial Baptist Church and Hospice of Huntington. The family would also like to express a special thank you to Richard Sexton.
