Obituary



Robert Wesley Gill, 89, of Huntington, husband of Beulah M. Galloway Gill, followed his heavenly angels into the arms of Jesus, December 8, 2015 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House following a brief illness. He was born April 22, 1926 in Huntington, WV, a son of the late Hezekiah Fontley and Dollie Hite Gill. He was the last of 12 children having been preceded in death by six brothers and five sisters: Ruth, Bertha, Irvin, Leland, James, Naomi, Ophelia, Christine, Lloyd, Norman, and Billie. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Hilda Miller Gill, and second wife, Marian Boggs Gill. Robert was a US Army Veteran of WW II, having served with the Company C, 756th Tank Battalion. He was combat wounded, being "blowed out of a tank" in Germany and was a Purple Heart recipient. Robert shared many stories of the war with family and friends including being the first battalion to reach Hitler's home, Berchtesgaden, after he fled Germany. Robert was a beloved member of Norway Avenue Church of Christ, and Ashland Area Woodcarvers. He retired from Houdaille Industries having started as a janitor after returning from the war, and worked his way up in the plant to supervisor and later general manager of both the Huntington and Canada plants. Robert was a gifted wood carver and loved to hunt and fish spending many vacations in Canada fishing on the Marten River. In addition to his wife, survivors include a step daughter and husband, Karen and Richard Crespo of Proctorville; a step son and wife, James 'Tim' and Janet Galloway of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren and spouses, Keri and Ryan Harbison of Milton, Sara and Eric Early of Summerfield, NC, Maggie and Junior Henning and Joey and Kristi Stephens, Jacksonville FL, James Michael Galloway of NY; and great grandchildren, Evan and Emily Harbison of Milton, Abbi and Kati Early of Summerfield, NC, Samuel Wade, Josie, and Danny Henning, and Taylor, Noah, Jacob, and Chloe Stephens of Jacksonville FL; one sister-in-law, Virginia Gill, a host of nieces and nephews, and special traveling companions and friends, Willard and Betty Baker. Funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 pm Saturday, December 12, 2015 at Chapman's Mortuary with minister Jeff Garrett officiating. Burial with military graveside rites, conducted by WV Honor Guard Post 16 Huntington, will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Huntington. Friends may visit family after 12:00 pm until service time Saturday at Chapman's Mortuary.
