Fred Rees Toothman

Fred Rees Toothman,
95, of Titusville, FL formerly of Huntington, WV, died Saturday April 26,
2014 in St. Francis Hospice Care Center Titusville. Funeral service will be
conducted 2:00 PM Thursday May 1, 2014 at Chapman’s Mortuary Huntington with
Pastor Trent Eastman officiating. Burial will be in Woodmere Memorial Park.
Fred was born October 26, 1918 in Hepzibah, WV (Harrison County) a son of
the late Glenn J.R. & Elsie Rees Toothman. He graduated Victory High School,
Clarksburg, WV, School of Mines, West Virginia University, (B.S.E.M. 1941) (M.S.E.M.
1946), Post Graduate School, U.S. Naval Academy, Aerology, 1945. He worked
during school vacations as a member of surveying crew, Hutchinson Coal Co.,
Fairmont, WV 1934-1939. Worked on summer job at Gary, WV for U.S. Coal &
Coke Co., 1939; and at Holden, WV for Island Creek Coal Co. 1940. He entered
the Navy as an Ensign in 1941 and served two terms of duty in Pacific area
during Word War II. Then a Lieutenant Commander in the Navel Reserve
(Retired). Fred was employed by the C & O Railway Company as a Field
Engineer, Coal Development Department, July 1, 1946, promoted to Mining
Engineer in 1950, served two years as Assistant Director, Materials &
Equipment Division; U.S. Solid Fuels Administration in Washington, D.C., on
leave of absence 1951-53. Promoted to Administrative Assistant-Engineer in
1957 and to Engineer of Coal Properties in charge of the Department in 1959,
Director of Coal Development-C & O/B & O, March 1, 1966 and Assistant Vice
President September 1973. He was a member of West Virginia Society of
Professional Engineers (President 1965-66), American Institute of Mining &
Metallurgical Engineers, Chairman of Central Appalachian Section 1962,
Chairman Coal Division 1967, Board of Directors, SME 1968-1972, Advisory
Board, WVU Chamber of Commerce, WV (Land Use & Natural Resources Committee,
and Chamber of Commerce, Huntington, WV (Transportation
Committee-Huntington, WV). He was an Elder at Enslow Park Presbyterian
Church and a member of the New Baptist Church. Some of his honors were;
Sigma Gamma Epsilon, WVU 1938, Tau Beta Pi, WVU 1939, Letter of
Commendation, Admiral Halsey, 1943, Sigma Xi, WVU, 1946, and Who’s Who is
Science and Industry, 1976. He wrote a publication: “Conveyor Mining in West
Virginia” Research Bulletin # 22, WVU (1946) and 5 books; Coal In My Blood,
Great Coal Leaders, Great Football Coaches. WV, Working For the Chessie
System & Tim The Little Kitten. He was preceded in death by his first wife
Nadine Bailey Toothman. Survivors include his wife Velma S. Neale Toothman,
one son, Brent H. Toothman of Titusville, FL, and a stepson Steven B. Neale,
Jr & wife Letha of Fl., one granddaughter, Megan Toothman Zapfel of Chapin,
SC, two great grandsons, Glenn Zapfel III & Rees Zapfel. Veterans Honor
Guard Post 16 will conduct military graveside rites. Friends may call at the
funeral home after 1:00 PM on Thursday.
