Obituary
Everett Curtis "Jim" White, 84, of Huntington, West Virginia, died peacefully November 11, 2016 in Woodlands Retirement Community Health Care, following an incapacitating stroke in late August. He is survived by his wife of nearly 39 years, Lois Sovine White; three sons, Hal Edward (Carol), Glenn Arthur (Lisa), and Todd Curtis (Kellie) White: adult stepchildren, Jennifer L. Ball and Jeffrey H. Ball; grandchildren Matthew (Katrina), Christopher, Allison, Charles and James White, all of Huntington, and Timothy White of Ashland, Kentucky; and great grandchildren, Matti, Cash, Coen, and Josie White of Huntington; and Logan White of Williamsburg, Iowa. Everett last worked as Administrative Assistant with the West Virginia Department of Energy in Charleston. He also held various managerial and computer data processing positions with Chaffin Coal Company, The Equitable Insurance Company, Corbin, Ltd., and Pilgrim Glass Company. Born August 31, 1932 to the late Carl Edward and Bunah Morrison White at his boyhood home on 5th. Avenue in East Huntington, Everett was called "Jimmy" during his preschool days. The name "Jim" stayed with him for life among family and friends. Sisters, Mary Margaret Vaughn and Doris Garvin; and brothers, Carl "Bruff" and David White, all preceded him in death. Everett graduated in the 1950 Class of Huntington East High School, and served as its reunion committee president. He also served with the U.S. Air Force in Korea from 1952-1956. Following military service, he attended Marshall University, focusing on business and computer classes. He was a member of Community of Grace United Methodist Church, a Kentucky Colonel, and affiliated with Master Mason of Western Star Lodge #11 AF and AM; Beni Kedem Shriners, and Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons of West Virginia. Throughout their marriage, Everett and Lois enjoyed camping West Virginia's parks, especially nearby Beech Fork State Park, and made lifelong friends along the way. They also traveled extensively across the nation, visiting national parks and scenic treasures, and enjoyed fishing at Canada's Parry Sound. After retirement, the couple spent 20 consecutive winters in Surfside Beach, SC where they opened their door of hospitality to folks from far and wide. Everett was a fun-loving and generous man who lived large and shared his outlook for the "good life" with many. Following high school he often played trumpet with local night club bands around the city. As his sons began to play youth sports, he helped coach their teams. Years later, as a faithful Big Green member, Everett and Lois attended Marshall football, basketball and baseball games. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, Pinochle, Mexican Train, and his beloved dachshunds, as well as a good cigar and a stiff bourbon and water! Additional survivors include sisters-in-law, Betty White of Huntington; Carol Sovine Rowsey of Hurricane and Marcia Sovine of Independence, KS; brother-in-law, Paul D. Wise (Jane) of Colorado Springs, CO, and life-long friends, Marjorie Streib and Barbara Everett, both of Huntington and Bill Wheeler of Cincinnati, OH. Funeral services will be conducted at noon Wednesday, November 16, 2016, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Pastor Steven Hamrick officiating. Burial will be in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington, with military graveside rites conducted by Veterans Honor Guard Post 16 and Masonic graveside rites by Western Star Lodge #11 AF and AM. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday, November 15, 2016, at Chapman's Mortuary. The White family wishes to thank the staff and special caregivers of St. Mary's Medical Center, Health South Rehabilitation Hospital, Cabell Health Care Center, and Woodlands Retirement Community for their patience, compassion, and service during this journey. Acknowledgements of Everett's memory may be made to the Community of Grace United Methodist Church, 225 28th Street, Huntington, WV 25702.
