Obituary
Alice Marie “Pat” John,
90, of Huntington, passed away on Monday, February 24, 2014 at the Emogene
Dolin Jones Hospice House. She was born on April 2, 1923 in Morristown, NJ,
the daughter of the late James William Patterson and Alice Catherine Dowd
Patterson. She was preceded in death by her husband Winfield Clinton John
II, MD. and a brother, James William Patterson, Jr. Pat graduated from the
College of Saint Elizabeth majoring in Biology and Language. She entered the
U.S. Army, and while serving, attended Emory University and was a member of
the first graduating class in physical therapy. Upon graduation, she was
commissioned as a 2nd Lt. during World War II. She helped start the Physical
Therapy department at Cabell Huntington Hospital and later went to work at
the Highlawn Cerebral Palsy Clinic.
Pat was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Ann’s Circle
and Women’s Guild for over 60 years, as well as the Catholic Daughters of
America. In addition, she served in several capacities as a member of the
Cabell County Medical Society Alliance, the West Virginia State Medical
Association Alliance, the American Medical Society Alliance, and the
Southern Medical Association Alliance. She was also a member of the
Westmoreland Women’s Club and Caduceus Garden Club. Pat is survived by a
loving sister, Aileen Louise Patterson Stefani of New Providence, NJ. In
addition, she is survived by her son and daughter-in-law: Dr. Winfield
Clinton John III and Linda Sue Rollins John of Ashland, KY. two daughters
and a son-in-law: Bridget Marie John Walton of Richmond, VA, Carolyn Louise
John Grimes and Ronald D. Grimes of Huntington, WV, five grandchildren and
spouses: Adrienne Elizabeth John-Cooper (Ryan), Winfield Clinton John IV
(Nicole), Andrew Hines Walton, Angela Marie Watts (Kevin) and Christopher
Matthew Grimes (Sarah). Nine great grandchildren: Zane Winfield Cooper,
Ethan Joshua John, Brennan Eric John, Logan William John, Alyssa Marie
Watts, Tristan Dain Watts, Jacob Allen Bailey, Jenna Christine Grimes, and
Siarah Mattison Grimes. Funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday,
March 1, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church by Fr. Charles
McGinnis. Friends may call from noon until service time at the church.
Graveside services will follow at Woodmere Memorial Park.
