Herbert
Eugene Varney
(March 31, 1930 - July 31, 2009)
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the
faith...II Timothy 4:7 On Friday, July 31, 2009, Herbert Eugene
Varney, 79. of Huntington, WV, went to his Heavenly Home. God
shall wipe away all tears...there shall be no more death, neither sorrow,
nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain...Revelations 21:4. Funeral
services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Tuesday, August 4, 2009, at Grace
Gospel Church. Rev. Randall Robertson will officiate. Burial will follow at
Cyrus Cemetery, Cyrus, WV. He was born March 31,1930 at Varney, WV, a son of
the late Alexander K and Myrtle Meade Varney. Two sisters, Bertha Louise
Curry and Anna Ruth VandeBunte also preceded him in death. Mr. Varney
graduated from Huntington High School, Moody Bible Institute, Chicago IL.,
and Marshall University with an AB, MA, and Administration degrees. He also
attended West Virginia University and Alderson Broadus College. Over a span
of 54 years, Mr. Varney served as pastor at Faith Gospel Church, Mason Co.,
Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Cabell Co., Cyrus Baptist Church, Wayne
Co.,, Macedonia Baptist Church, Cabell Co., and Wayne Baptist Church, Wayne
Co. As an educator, he served in many capacities in the Cabell County School
System as a teacher, principal, supervisor, and Assistant Superintendent in
charge of Elementary Education. He was a member of the Cabell County Retired
School Employees and the East Huntington Kiwanis. Survivors include his
beloved wife of 54 years, LaWassa Tomes Varney; two sisters Geraldine Weeks
of Huntington, and Mary Lou (Ralph) Colburn of Rockford, IL; several nieces
and nephews and other family members. Friends may call from 5 to 8 PM.
Monday, August 3, 2009 at Chapman's Mortuary and one hour before the service
at Grace Gospel Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the
Gideons, or other faith based organizations for the continuation of the
Lord's ministry. Well done good and faithful servant...Enter into the joy of
your Lord. Matt.25:21
