Obituary

Harold Wesley Washington, 83, passed away September 15, 2015 at Saint Mary's Medical Center, Huntington, WV. He was born January 7, 1932 in Griffin Georgia to the late John and Verlula Washington. He was married to Ruth Irene Lloyd Washington, September 5, 1954. Harold served in the Selective Service of the Army, and was stationed in Occupied Germany during the Korean conflict. He received an honorable discharge in 1954. He worked for Columbia Gas of Virginia for 30 years, until his retirement in 1986. An avid outdoorsman, Hal and his wife Ruth traveled the country after his retirement, and hiked the entire Appalachian Trail in 1987. They were members of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, and were resident hosts at the Blackburn Trail Center in Northern Virginia. Hal and Ruth were known as "trail angels" for their hospitality to the through hikers that passed near their home in Lexington, Virginia, greeting them with homemade cookies, sandwiches, and beer. Hal and Ruth were married 58 years, and she was the great love of his life. They taught their sons their most important values: integrity, hard work, the joy of giving to others, and how to love life even during difficult challenges. He never fully recovered from her death 3 years ago. After her passing, he lived with his son Glen and daughter-in-law Mary in Chesapeake, OH. Harold is survived by his sons Glen and Douglas; daughter-in-law Mary; five grandchildren, Theresa, Christopher, Brian, Patrick, and John; six great-grandchildren, Jacob, Maximillian, Grace, Luke, Gianna, and Joseph, sister Edna Thaxton, and sister-in-law and brother -in-law Barbara and Earl McQuaide. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Douglas.  A memorial mass will be held 1pm Saturday September 19 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Huntington, WV., Father Dean Borgmeyer officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph Parish or the Facing Hunger Food Bank, Huntington, WV,
Arrangements are being handled by Chapman Funeral Home, Huntington. It is right and just that they are together again and with the Lord. Until we see them again, they live in us.
