Obituary

Roy Donald Baker, Sr., 91, of Huntington, widower of Jane Frances Barnes Baker, passed away Monday February 1, 2016 at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral Liturgy will be conducted at noon on Friday at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, 828 15th St. Huntington, by Father Bill Petro. Burial will follow in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington. He was born June 7, 1924 in Mannington, WV a son of the late Ora and Esther Smith Baker. He was a retired superintendent with Weirton Steel and was a US Navy Veteran having served during WWII. Papa Roy--the most solid guy I've ever known. Chopped down trees into his 70's, built his own house between steel mill shifts, drank buttermilk with onion sandwiches, ornery as hell right up until the end. You'll be missed, but you made us all better. (Chris) It is the heaviest of hearts that I share the news of my Dad's passing last evening. He was the most wonderful father that any son could dream of having .,,, faithful, loving, and most ALWAYS looking ahead to protect my next step. He was there to catch me in his loving arms when I lost my way. He was born to be a grandfather ! He loved EVERY moment with Ryan, Chris, and Patrick ! He shared both his failures and his accomplishments in ways that only a grandfather can do. I was often in awe of both his patience and his wisdom. With the birth of Jack last August and the impending birth of Benjamin next month, he was excited to be a great grandfather and to hold those sweet babies in his arms ! He spent the last seven years of his life sharing a home with our family, making us laugh every day, helping us by folding countless baskets of laundry in what he called " The Baker Laundry Business" in which he took great pride because HE was helping his family. He also loved to watch his beloved Pirates and cuss at the TV with us ! "Hey, Dad" ... I love you very much and look forward to being with you again in heaven someday !!! (Don) Survivors include a son and daughter in law Roy D. “Don” Baker, Jr. and Victoria Ann Baker; grandchildren Ryan Baker and his fiancé Annie Giagni; Christopher Baker and his wife Elly Myers Baker and Patrick Baker; two great grandchildren Jack Barrett Baker and Benjamin Daniel Baker and a cousin Pamela Baker Arena. Friends may call from 6 to 8 pm Thursday at the Reger Funeral Home. A special thank you to his care givers James Elswick and April Zieglar.
